Paying homage to the classics…

Sitting in a quiet cafe, energized by Chypre 7 from Orca, I find myself appreciating what Gibs has created even more. Chypre is such a classic fragrance structure, yet somehow he made it relevant without disturbing its fundamentals. Familiar without feeling dated (classic, but alive in the present).

Quite accidentally, I also brought my vintage Pelikan, which I inked just two days ago…thanks, Boid! My grandfather gave it to me when I was in high school, and for some reason, I never used it until now. Don’t ask me what year he gave it to me because I won’t spiel.

There’s something about writing with an old pen from my grandfather while wearing a contemporary Filipino interpretation of a classic fragrance. Both evoke memories of the past while still belonging to the present.

After picking Gibs’ brain yesterday, I realized something else, craftsmanship takes time.

Success isn’t overnight. Behind a finished perfume are mistakes, trials, criticism, reformulations, first editions, second editions, and countless decisions we never see. Gibs may be a one man show, but his creations represent years of learning, refining, and trying again.

And strangely, that made me think about my work as a manager with Sun Life.

Financial security works much the same way. My clients save, consistently pay their premiums, build, diversify, and wait. One solution eventually becomes several (protection, savings, income, investments) each serving its own purpose. The benefits we enjoy later are often the fruits of decisions made years earlier.

This may sound like a pitch, but hey… that’s exactly why the moment inspired me.

Maybe I’m not simply paying homage to the classics. I’m paying homage to the classic idea of craftsmanship (doing the work, making mistakes, refining, being patient, and allowing time to do its part).

A vintage Pelikan from my grandfather.
A modern Filipino chypre rooted in an old perfumery tradition.
And a reminder that some of the best things in life are not instant.
