I've been waiting a while for this one!! 🐻

There's a section of the forest I've always known was a perfect spot for a cub in the trees photo. My buddy Jack has got some amazing photos there and I was dreaming of my chance to do the same.

Sunday, I finally got my chance.. and the bears decided to overdeliver.

Mama and her three cubs were all up in the trees when I found them, and I got to spend about 15 minutes watching the little family climb around before mama came down and kept an eye on me while the cubs looked to her to see what to do next.

Eventually they got the hint, climbed down and disappeared into the meadow together.

One of those encounters where the shots I had in my head ended up even better in real life and I'm glad I got to enjoy it with the guy who inspired my love for these beautiful Florida black bears.

Woooooow what a weekend it was with the bears! I think my final *seen* count was around 16, but I was also there for 8 hours. 🫠

Got to meet this handsome fella and he gave me a quick lesson in personal boundaries.

He wasn't letting me get close in the car so I decided to approach on foot, as safely as possible.

He tolerated me for a bit and right after this shot he made his personal space policy clear with a couple stomps and grunts, so I backed off and we said our goodbyes.

Thanks for the great photo big guy, you're a champion. 🤣

Revisiting my first Florida black bear cub encounter some time back with @007flickz exploring the tree line for these adorable little ones.

We definitely startled them as we pulled up, as is evident in the look and pose from this one as they hurried down from the tree top to get back to Mama's side as quick as possible!

I've been back dozens of times since then, sometimes seeing them and sometimes not but always wishing to relive this encounter again.

this big ole beast of a bear (who is now called willie the giant, unfortunately for him) came to show us how to demurely drink from a puddle while toting a lady bug on his back.

Heyyyyy bear, heyyy BIGGG bear!!! 🐻

What a fun encounter this was. I made my way up to the forest Wednesday, hoping to capture some awesome Milky Way and meteor shots.

I decided to go early to get some possible snake or bear time in, thankfully that paid off because the meteor plan got clouded out. 😭

Ran into some friends and we did a bit of exploring, then I spotted a huge figure crossing the road and planted myself to wait.

When we saw this enormous bear come sauntering down the path we knew where he was headed and got to sit and watch him come down for a little sip of muddy water.

My first time getting to see this big boy, hopefully the first of many more!

Spicy danger noodle, the ultimate nope rope... my first time seeing this beautiful snake!!

The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake has a pretty bad rep, but this encounter was a perfect reminder that their reputation isn't the whole story.

Rather than flee, he stood his ground, rattled his tail, and made it very clear that I was close enough. I thought so too.

That rattle is one of nature's most honest warning systems, giving idiots like me a chance to back away before I get hurt trying to get the shot. 😂

I couldn't have dreamed of a better first encounter with a mama bear and her cubs!!

We stopped for the mama bear drinking from a puddle along the road. As we approached she slipped into the palmettos never quite leaving, just watching us from the edge of the brush. I couldn't quite figure out why...

Then I heard the rustling above us, and yelled to my buddy Jack - there are babies!!!

The first cub made its way down so quickly, it lost its footing and fell the final 8 ft to the ground and disappeared. The second was much more methodical and slow coming down which is where these shots come from.

As soon as the second cub hit the ground they all quickly made their way deeper into the forest, not to be seen again.

An absolutely phenomenal encounter that I am so happy to have experienced, and I can't wait to do it again!!

Yesterday marked 1 year since I first went out with a camera with the goal of taking pictures of Wildlife and nature. In November of 2024 went out to Everglades NP w/ my colleague, friend and photography vampire, @kens_big_earth , he brought his camera & lens, showed me what it could do and the rest is history. A lifelong hobby of spending time in nature to unplug, exploded into a full blown midlife crisis obsession and within months I bought my first camera started hitting the trails like never before. I am a teacher and love what I do … but for the first time in my life. I feel like I’m doing something creative and self expressive. I felt it was appropriate to pay tribute to all of you teachers who I have met online and in the real world who have taught me so much, provided generous advice, constructive feedback, invaluable guidance, shared locations, not shared locations, encouraged me, humbled me, inspired me, reassured me, challenged me to aim big. Thanks to you all. Community is one of the unforeseen outcomes of this pursuit. I am eternally grateful. See you in church 🌿🌴🌲🌊🌱

Hunter vs. Scavenger

This confident male bobcat emerges from the reeds to evaluate the risks/rewards of a black vulture dinner with me in its neighborhood. I first spotted him circling the buzzard trio with a father-daughter in the background, and while reviewing photos later, realized the dad was fellow wildlife fanatic and friend @007flickz. Always good to see these cats thriving in Central FL.
