PLEASE READ AND SHARE: Tomorrow is the first of many rallies. Join myself, NYC Compost Project partners, Save Our Compost and individuals who believe in the effectiency and effectiveness of community composting. The NYC Mayor proposed budget cuts which in turn DSNY went and eliminated the community composting program.

Because of these cuts 115 people will loose their jobs (a lot of them being Black and Brown)! This is inexcusable.

What is community composting?

Community composting programs collect and turn New Yorkers’ food waste into rich compost for our parks, gardens & playground as well as provide valuable education and outreach resources. These programs are a critical tool in the fight against climate change.

Who is impacted by the cuts?

Community composting organizations include GrowNYC, Big Reuse, LES Ecology Center, Earth Matter NY, New York Botanical Garden, Queens Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden.

Every New Yorker! These budget cuts will eliminate valuable opportunities to compost their food scraps, in turn adding them back into the waste stream, feeding rats!

Do we need it even though Curbside Composting is coming?

There cannot be a successful Curbside Composting program in New York City without a strong outreach and community composting network to educate New Yorkers. Budget cuts are also delaying curbside composting expansion to Staten Island and the Bronx until at least October 2024. Community composting organizations also focus largely on the production of finished compost used to improve soils, while curbside composting largely uses anaerobic digestion to process food scraps.

Join KYRC on this #GivingTuesday as we celebrate the power of community and collective action! Our journey towards empowering Black and Brown communities has allowed us to support amazing individuals like Kevin Livingston of 100 Suits. Seven years ago, #ColinKaepernick's suit donation sparked a partnership that has grown into a force for positive change.

From responding to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to supporting youth employment. Our collaboration with 100 Suits has been impactful. Teaming up with KYRC co-founder Nessa, we recently distributed over 200 backpacks to children and migrants in NYC, along with free haircuts and manicures.

Kevin expresses heartfelt gratitude for the ongoing support from Know Your Rights Camp. This #GivingTuesday, consider making a tax-deductible donation or pledging to stand with us in our pursuit of justice and liberation. Together, let's build a future where equity, dignity, and true freedom shine brightly in the fabric of our society.

"Families are coming to us broken; they're coming to us truly in a sense of a tragedy. They don't know what to do; they are grieving. So it's difficult for them to even have to go through this process knowing that they have to fight to get answers to just find out what happened to their loved one. And it's unfortunate how long families are left waiting without any answers. All of the families that we've spoken with who have recently lost a loved one within the last month have received no answers whatsoever from the medical examiner's office." @Nicolelynn.esq

KYRC #AutopsyInitiative leaders Nicole Martin and Iman McAllister talk about the commitment to ensuring transparency and justice by providing a second autopsy free of charge for the families of victims of in-custody or police-related deaths. In the clip, Martin explains the importance of this initiative.
