Artwork:

New large scale work (550 x 275cm) from my ’Spirit Matter’ series in the studio for an exhibition at the Nirox Foundation @niroxfoundation in November.

Jonathan about his work: “I’m a classically trained painter who is now making largely abstract works informed by a love for the alchemy of paint and for sacred art across the ages. I’m conjuring works that oscillate between minimalism and expressionism, with a spiritual undercurrent drawn from personal experience. My work is about essence, I’m trying to create a language for myself that can speak where words fail; or at least to give signposts towards experiences of heightened illumination.

With the 'Spirit Matter' series, I am painting in reverse. The canvas is dyed with a dark black or indigo. I then begin bleaching parts of the surface to reveal lighter areas. The process happens slowly, in many layers, as I attempt to encourage an ethereal light into the artwork. The result is hopefully very open and suggestive of a numinous experience. The paintings are not depictions of Spirit, how can one paint the invisible? Rather, they are an evocation, an echo, a vapour.”

she’s wearing a black dress tonight
grass blades kiss her feet
a mind invaded
with yesterday’s memory
sun beams latch on skin
wind soothes a burn from a bee sting
hair levitates
sounds of time rushing whistle in her ears
moment captured by a lost heart

images captured a little while ago on a sunny day
