Small spaces carry the scene, and artist-run spaces punch well above their weight on volume. Look at the number of live original music events that @moshpit.bar and @lazythinking__ hosted vs @marysunderground - the number of available gigs for emerging and/or community-focused artists is about to be significantly cut down and the flow-on effect is going to be alarming. UPDATE: since posting this, @suitesevena have announced that they are also closing their doors

DALTS’ RANT ABOUT LIVE MUSIC VENUE CLOSURES So today @thelinkandpin Woy Woy hit a milestone: 6000 followers on Instagram. Combined with our Facebook profile, that’s nearly 16,000 people who care about live music, original artists and small venues. And yet today, I hear about another Sydney live music venue closure. I am not going to speak about @moshpit.bar as it’s still too raw to process, but to lose @_blah_bar_ (silver lining there with maybe a new venue) @darling.nikkis @185_bar as well in a matter of weeks. This is not cool. I want to say to these venue owners and staff: I see you. I am intimately acquainted with the constant shit sandwiches you are forced to eat by the current economy and red tape and the ATO. I know you work so bloody hard to pay your rent and bills, and the artists you host. I have been privileged to book emerging and established artists at Link & Pin Woy Woy. We started it because there was nowhere for indie artists to play halfway between Sydney and Newcastle. We busted the cover-band culture which so often prevails in small towns that have big pubs and endless revenue from poker machines. Man, I would kill to have that budget at my disposal. But I would rather die than prey on gamblers for revenue. Even our pinball machine is free to use. I don’t know what to say other than the above. We know everyone is struggling. But without grassroots live music venues, we will never see emerging bands cross over; nor will we see heritage and touring bands rocking up to play in NSW. The closure of venues represents a dangerous culture shift, whereby artists will cease to exist. Think of it as an algorithm: this blip of closures has the potential to wipe out new artists because there will eventually be nowhere to play and nowhere to commune with like-minded people. So please: see a gig while you can, and if you’re able.

In this economy you can’t just be in an awesome rock band with a gig coming up this Friday. You’ve also gotta have a day job. Here’s the boys doing our bit to contribute to society. Can anyone figure out what Josh is doing?
