HBCU- A supportive environment celebrating African American history and pride. ✊🏾🖤

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were founded primarily before 1964 to educate African Americans, providing essential educational access during centuries of legal segregation.

@alcornstateu is the oldest public historically Black land-grant institution in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi’s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn.

Alcorn is a place of purpose, history, and discovery. Famous for its “Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite” marching band, highly regarded Nursing, Agriculture, Business, and Education programs.

Is it safe for a cis passing trans undergrad student to pursue Black Greek life if the only way in is to hide who they are?

In this episode of The Z Spot, Lee Dyer talks about the risks of cis‑passing privilege for trans students who go out for Black Greek orgs without disclosing. He names the danger of being “found out” during the process or after crossing, when line brothers or sisters realize you are not who they assumed — and how quickly that can turn into threat, isolation, or harm for a young person who just wanted community. For Lee, this was the reality check: we are talking about kids, navigating identity, secrecy, and safety in spaces that claim to be about brotherhood and sisterhood.

Is there any way to police gender in Black Greek orgs that doesn’t end up excluding someone—or “letting in” someone you were trying to keep out?

In this week’s episode of The Z Spot, Dr. Van Bailey talks about why attempts to strictly control gender in Black Greek letter organizations always have a cost and that cost does not always yield the answer or result you were trying to control. He argues that, instead of doubling down on policing, BGLOs need more nuanced, informed conversations about gender that reflect the reality of their own membership and make room for trans and gender‑expansive people to exist safely and openly.
