“A story of recent China but also a universal tale of young women’s emancipation, THREE is a taut and nuanced excavation of maternal love, family bond, and the cost of ambition and change. —Yiyun Li, author of THE BOOK OF GOOSE

After a long separation, a writer living in America reunites with her family in a small, industrial town in China. On her return, she looks back at her fraught relationship with her mother and finds herself telling her story from the beginning, going back as far as living memory will allow. As she chronicles her mother’s life, she details the intimate moments they shared as they weathered fights, layoffs, and illnesses, and she unearths the forces that pressurized and combusted their lives: echoes of distant wars and not-too-distant revolutions, tides of breakneck modernization, and the relentless erosion of time.

For fans of Annie Ernaux’s THE YEARS, THREE is fable-like and precise, at once a sweeping view of an era and an elegy for a splintered family.

NA ZHONG is a Chinese writer based in New York. Her writings have appeared in The Drift, The Kenyon Review, and Equator, among others. A MacDowell Fellow and Center for Fiction/Susan Kamil Emerging Writer Fellow, she co-founded Accent Accent and writes a column at China Books Review. THREE is her first novella.

🔹Cover reveal for LEARNING by Courtney Bush, out June 23 from Joyland Editions and available for preorder from @asterism_books at the link in our bio.🔹

LEARNING is a woman’s account of a single Monday working in a progressive New York City day care. The narrator, Courtney, spends her days in The Blue Room guiding her three-year-old students through the early lessons of their lives. Her consciousness flickers between the children—full of generosity, wonder, accidental brilliance, and infinite questions—and her life outside the classroom. While tying shoes and peeling clementines, Courtney returns to grief over the death of a hometown friend; her recent divorce; the hope of a new relationship; her family back in Mississippi; and thoughts on forgiveness, empathy, and her own capacity for cruelty. As the day goes on, a threat from the school director’s ex-boyfriend introduces real danger, tilting the fragile order of the classroom toward chaos.

Courtney Bush is a writer and filmmaker from Mississippi who lives in New York and works in childcare. She is the author of EVERY BOOK IS ABOUT THE SAME THING (@newestyorkco, 2022), the 2022 National Poetry Series selection I LOVE INFORMATION (@milkweed_books, 2023), A MOVIE (Lavender Ink, 2025) and THE LAMB WITH THE TALKING SCROLL (@blush_lit, 2025). Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in the Poetry Project Newsletter, Critical Quarterly, the Yale Review, the Poetry Review (UK), and the Brooklyn Rail, among others.

“Compulsively, delectably readable—funny, sexy, sharp, charming, sly... I gobbled it up in one sitting.” —Danielle Dutton, author of PRAIRIE, DRESSES, ART, OTHER and co-founder of Dorothy, a publishing project

“Lewis holds up pairs of objects in a mirror, and it’s our pleasure to watch as their proportions warp. A modern, delicate exercise in juxtaposition.” —Lillian Fishman, author of ACTS OF SERVICE
