Join us in welcoming our 2026-2027 MABF Fellows & Residents!!! Our review committee found ourselves deeply inspired by the rigor and expansiveness demonstrated in the record number of applications we received. This particular cohort includes poets, critics, filmmakers, curators, and DJ-scholars who are indexing new freedom ways in creative work, through excavating queer histories, drawing connections between blues and techno, reimagining Black women artists in dynamic critical context, and documenting eco-spatial studies through the body and visual forms. You can learn more about their respective practices and the MABF core programs at the link in our bio. 🔗✨ ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE: Kris Mckinney: @kdot__m Josue Bessiake: @josuebessiake Ian Solomon: @1anjohn bree grant: @breeintransit FELLOWS: Ade Omotosho: #AdeOmotosho Miles Reuben: @milesthedirector Ryan C. LEEWAY (n) /ˈlēˌwā/ “The Time, Space, or Freedom to Pursue” The more I make and share it becomes clear my favorite way to see the work live is *with* people; The gallery is great, but home is where the heart is. For me, LEEWAYS is another avenue to connect people to place and for you, more accessible way to collect my works. Launching with custom steel polaroids from my “Iron, Copper, Steel” (2024) installation featuring all Michigan landscapes originally shown at my solo show “CITY WILD” with @playgroundDetroit. This is a first offering of what will be intentional collections of pieces rooted in my explorations of place. Look out for more places for your wall, desk or body soon. Thank you for everything .🌱

More pictures of @empireofdirtresidency - we went to a Pow Wow held by the Yaqan Nukiy people who are part of the Ktunaxa Nation, we had Indian style tacos, and saw one of the ceremonial beginnings of the Pow Wow - Chief Louie leading with the nation’s flag - note the other flags including the pride flag… During his speech the Chief shared an incident where a visiting Chief was taunted and had to deal with racist remarks in the town of Creston (while on his way to the pow wow). Chief Louie spoke about the impact of the incident and how Indigenous people are resilient, he offered the visiting Chief a heartfelt acknowledgment and some money as a form of repair and healing. I felt the hurt, the shame, the anger, and the reaching out to community for healing…..I was grateful to be there, to witness and be in solidarity. This was a very moving moment. I also added a nighttime view of the mountains and myself making a ship shape ( hah feeling ship shape?) in the wood workshop at the residency…

Empire of Dirt Residency- so grateful for this Black artist residency in the mountains that allowed me to go to BC and hang out with some fabulous artists.. these photos where the mountains are so present and timeless…On arrival we found the only Jamaican restaurant in Cranbrook called Ella’s and we were greeted so warmly and welcomed! We visited Lake Kootenay and check the view from my studio! So grateful for this time to think and make art although it was very hard to leave my Wood-Gupta fam… thanks @sabrewst for the recommendation! Thanks Marnie! Such a wonderful experience!
