Two years ago my mom told me I would fall in love with South Africa. I did not agree. I always followed the oceans, the forests, wasn’t a fan of the heat. And here I am, spending most days of the year under the African sun and call it home - and I love it!

This year has been f*ck€|} for me. I’ve experienced depression in the past, but I don’t think I knew what “suffering from depression” really entailed until this year. Knowing me, you know a jubilant person. Someone strong and spontaneous. I’ve let my negative self talk completely take over. I’ve found myself unworthy of pretty much everything, friendships, partnerships, opportunities…. It’s like because I can’t “try hard”, dance well or summit hard shit right now, I have nothing to offer. And instead of trying to be content with the present and what my reality is, I have constantly tried to escape. New hobbies, reading, mindless social scrolls, lists lists LISTS. Lists that I stopped writing because I knew I was not going to attempt to cross those tasks off. When I stopped making lists, I stopped giving a shit.

It’s mad scary when you feel like a foreign entity in your own body. And that’s the only sentiment I can relate to this year. Feeling like my body is not my own, I don’t recognize those legs, or this fatigue.

It’s taken a while, but those lists are flowing freely now…. And I’m checking shit off. I know there is still a climber in me. And even though I gave up on myself yesterday and the day before, and the 13 consecutive weeks before that, it doesn’t mean I have to give up on today or tomorrow. Doing things for “future me”. A me that is actually appreciative instead of jaded. Can’t let future me down. She’s hard to impress, just like the old model I can tell.
