The Hour Glass Celebrates the Grand Opening of Its New Sydney Boutique

The Hour Glass celebrated the grand opening of its new Sydney boutique, housed within the iconic “Mushroom” building at 25 Martin Place, formerly the MLC Centre. Designed by renowned architect Harry Seidler and constructed between 1975 and 1977, the distinctive structure originally housed the Commercial Travellers’ Association. Its sculptural concrete column and circular form remain landmarks of Sydney’s modernist architecture.

Founded in Singapore in 1979, The Hour Glass has grown into one of Asia-Pacific’s leading luxury watch specialists. Beyond retail, the company has played an influential role in advancing watch culture and supporting the wider watchmaking industry, particularly through its longstanding commitment to independent watchmakers. Its efforts in introducing, promoting and educating collectors about independent horology have helped shape the region’s appreciation of fine watchmaking.

The evening was attended by The Hour Glass Group Managing Director Michael Tay (MT) and Wei Koh, founder of Revolution magazine, bringing together prominent figures from the watch industry and collecting community to mark the occasion.

The Freak [X] Blue never really got my attention as much as its grey sibling and neither did the bracelet. I have always felt like the Freak should be on a strap. However, I find myself having contrasting thoughts now after a month with it. The depth of the blue radiating from the center with its darkest corners amplified by the shadow of the angled minute track, plus the robustness yet comforting “lobster” styled bracelet really does it for me. I honestly, and if I dare say objectively, feel the versatility and soft beauty of this flying carousel is an absolute winner in the Freak [X] line.

Angus’s path to fine jewellery started behind a camera, not a workbench - graphic design and photography first, watchmaking and gemology later. Now he runs AHW Studio, a bespoke family jewellery business in the heart of the Strand Arcade, where sourcing the right gemstone can take as long as making the piece itself. His favourite hour comes after closing, when the arcade goes quiet and the real work can begin.

Few watches have challenged the conventions of watchmaking as profoundly as the Ulysse Nardin Freak. First conceived by Dr. Ludwig Oechslin in 2001, the original Freak dispensed with traditional hands, a dial and even a crown, transforming the movement itself into the display. Over the past 25 years, the Freak has become one of horology’s most influential innovations, generating 35 patents and pioneering the use of silicon technology in mechanical watchmaking. To celebrate both the 180th anniversary of Ulysse Nardin and the 25th anniversary of the Freak, the Maison has completely reengineered the new Freak [X], creating a more compact, refined and wearable interpretation of its iconic concept

At the heart of the watch lies the new UN-232 calibre, featuring a flying carousel movement, oversized silicon balance wheel, silicon hairspring and, for the first time in a Freak [X], a DIAMonSIL escapement that enhances efficiency, durability and precision. Housed in a redesigned 41 mm case, the movement is visible beneath a dramatic glassbox sapphire crystal that amplifies the depth of the rotating baguette mechanism. The watch also introduces elevated haute horlogerie finishing, a rose gold micro-rotor, improved water resistance and a quick-release strap system designed for everyday versatility. Built upon the technical legacy of the original Freak while incorporating five new patents, the new Freak [X] demonstrates how Ulysse Nardin continues to push the boundaries of contemporary watchmaking through innovation, micro-engineering and bold design
