HEADS UP: Mon Valley waking up to stench 🤢 thanks to sky-high hydrogen sulfide - or H2S - a pollutant that smells like rotten eggs.

It comes from @ussteelcorp’s #Clairton Coke Works, according to two studies and the company’s own data.

And it’s a problem YEARS in the making - one that new owners #nipponsteel now has an obligation to fix for folks who live nearby. @eng.nipponsteel

Little background: H2S is a colorless gas recognizable by its rotten-egg odor. Exposure to the levels of hydrogen sulfide we see in the Mon Valley can cause:

● irritation to the eyes, nose, or throat
● headaches
● poor memory
● tiredness
● breathing problems for some people with asthma
● balance problems

Smell it? Please make complaints to @healthallegheny (link in bio) & via @cmu.create.lab’s SmellPGH app.

You don’t need any training to get into mutual aid just block a Sunday morning and bring some plastic forks

HEADS UP: Mon Valley again waking up to stench thanks to H2S levels rising above the PA standard. Smell it? Like rotten eggs? Then make complaints to ACHD and via SmellPGH.

Why do we care about H2S?

Hydrogen Sulfide, or H2S, is a toxic gas that occurs both naturally (from sources such as swamps, manure pits, and oil, gas, and water wells) and as a result of industrial activity (including, most notably for our region, coke making).

According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, H2S is a colorless gas recognizable by its rotten-egg odor. Exposure to the levels of hydrogen sulfide we see in the Mon Valley can cause:

● irritation to the eyes, nose, or throat
● headaches
● poor memory
● tiredness
● breathing problems for some people with asthma
● balance problems

Where does it come from? @ussteelcorp, according to @healthallegheny and USS’s own data.

Election Day is rapidly approaching. Don’t miss out on this opportunity on Saturday, Oct. 10, to strategically prepare for the upcoming November election and beyond.

In this 2 hour interactive training and role play we will walk through different election interference scenarios so we can get ready and assess what tools, skills and relationships we can leverage to ensure every vote is counted and the election results are certified.

Participants will go through a short orientation to the political moment we are in and the rest of the time will be spent in groups to devise responses to potential threats this election season. All are welcome, including those actively working to defend and protect the right to vote. No prior experience is necessary.

We’re proud to be partnering with @pa_united_, @1hoodpower, @casasanjosepgh, @bpep.pgh and @aap_pgh on this important training. Sign up here: https://mobilize.us/s/z8DNca

What happens when Black power, truth, music and community all enter the same room? Last night at The Maverick, Pittsburgh found out. ✊🏾🔥

Common Thread’s Black Power Under Authoritarianism brought together Dr. Carmen Rojas, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Jefferson Cowie and Eddie S. Glaude Jr. for a powerful conversation about freedom, white supremacy, racial justice and the future of Black political power.

Then the music carried that energy into the night—@mikelikesrap and @avatarbenji set the tone before @social_qrx @slimthadj took over the after-party! 🎶🐻

This wasn’t just another event. It was education, culture, community and Black joy all under one roof. Pittsburgh, you truly had to be there.

#ICYMI: Tremendous reporting from the @pittsburghpg regarding how the fatal explosion at @ussteelcorp’s #Clairton Coke Works has reignited Mon Valley air quality concerns.

The deadly explosion at the plant that killed two workers — Timothy Quinn and Steven Menefee — last summer renewed questions about the dangers of living alongside industrial facilities. Residents across the Mon Valley continue to grapple with air pollution that is taking a toll on their health, keeping kids out of school and threatening the safety of future generations.

“Sometimes people can’t choose the ZIP code that they live in,” Germaine Patterson said. “Had I known that the impact was this great, I would not have moved here. I was not educated enough.”

Part 2 of EIA’s Ashante Josey interview. @ashante_dj —This @womenofvisionspgh VP is creating masterful work based on her family and childhood. One piece she uses as a muse a wash-worn diamond print blanket common in many households in the 90”s.
