• The 1990 MTV Video Music Awards performance is one of the most iconic moments in Madonna’s career—and honestly, in VMAs history.
✨The Look: Madonna dressed as a glamorous Marie Antoinette in an 18th-century-inspired ivory gown with corset, hip-widening panniers, and a towering blond wig adorned with white feathers . The costume took inspiration from Glenn Close’s costume in Dangerous Liaisons .‌‌
✨The Concept: Choreographer Vincent Paterson had the idea that voguing wasn’t that different from the court gestures of Marie Antoinette’s court—so they merged the two worlds .‌
✨Why It Mattered: This performance brought voguing and ballroom culture—rooted in Black and Latino LGBTQ+ communities—to a massive mainstream audience . As Pose co-creator Steven Canals put it: “She introduced the world to this community who, up until that point in time, had been a subculture” .‌‌
✨The Iconic Moment: Madonna and her dancers flashed their undergarments during the routine, and at one point she pushed two male dancers’ faces into her breasts . It was risqué, unapologetic, and unforgettable.‌
