20 BIPOC women.

This summer, I taught 20 BIPOC women how to climb and top rope belay, and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’m honoured to share climbing with other BIPOC women and to be the representation I never had when I first started.

When I began my climbing journey, I never imagined something like this would be possible. To now have introduced more than 50 BIPOC women to climbing through different events is incredibly surreal.

This series would not have been possible without the support of @huens, who believed in my abilities, my passion, and my commitment to this work. She advocated on my behalf and helped secure funding from @arcteryx. I also want to thank all of my family & friends who have shared, reposted, and engaged with my posts along the way.

I’m incredibly grateful for every single one of you. Building this community and watching it grow has been one of the most meaningful parts of my climbing journey. Seeing women try something new, challenge themselves, and discover that they belong in this space has made every bit of effort worth it.

Here’s to many more women finding their place in climbing! 🩵

Also a beautiful reminder to invest in community!!! Community is everything and I wouldn’t be here without it!

We came, we shared, we learned, we conquered, and above all, we had so much fun, together. This is what climbing is all about. ❤️

I became an instructor because, for a long time, I never saw anyone who looked like me in the climbing gym. Walking into the gym as a hijabi, I often felt like I stood out. There were moments when I felt self-conscious, out of place, and unsure if the eyes on me were simply curious or questioning whether I belonged there at all.

Over time, I realized that if I was feeling this way, there were probably other women feeling it too.

So I decided to become the person I had needed when I first started. Someone who could show other BIPOC women that they belong in these spaces just as much as anyone else. Someone who could help make that first step into the gym a little less intimidating and a little more welcoming.

More than teaching climbing, this has always been about creating a space where women feel seen, supported, and empowered to take up space unapologetically. Seeing that come to life through this project has meant more to me than I can put into words. ❤️

I am incredibly grateful for every participant who showed up with courage and openness, and for everyone who helped make this possible (huge shoutout to @huens ❤️ - thank you for seeing my vision and helping it come to life)

💜What is your proudest accomplishment as a climber?
🧡My proudest accomplishment, as cheesy as it is, is being able to finally touch and climb real rock. Especially my first outdoor lead, it was such an emotional moment. Being able to see my growth from the very beginning and improving every single season.

💜What has your experience been as a woman of colour in the world of climbing?
🧡My experience as a woman of colour in the climbing world or the outdoor world in general has been pretty rocky. I am honestly so thankful for my support group @colourthetrails . These wonderful women have helped in ways you could not have imagined. They are my lifelong sisters and I cherish my friendship with them deeply. Being a black climber in the climbing world is hard dealing with micro-aggression, unconformable climbing gym environments, cost, accessibility, gear, developing your skills and knowledge there always seems to be a hurdle that comes with every single step.

💜Would you like to share anything with other WOC that are interested in starting or advancing their skills?
🧡I would say find a black woman(s) run outdoor community that facilitate support, community and most importantly advocatism and calling out anti-blackness within the outdoor community. Also make sure to give back to outdoor communities, whether it's donations (because people need to start opening their wallets especially blm bio folks), donating gear, donating skills, volunteering, sharing post or accounts,etc. Really show your gratitude for the time these folks spend to help make the cause happen.
