SEVFIGURESℱ 7 Figure Dream Vol. 3: Something Out of Nothing STM: Spotlight Long before J’mon Whorton became the founder of STM, he was already learning how to create something new out of what life gave him using the things around him and never allowing his circumstances to dictate what he could become. Growing up, J’mon describes himself as a product of his environment. He didn’t always have access to something new, so he learned how to make the most of what was already around him. As a kid, he remembers waiting for his older brother to finally outgrow his clothes. Once they became his, J’mon would cut, bleach, and customize the pieces, transforming old outfits into something that felt completely different. At the time, it was simply creativity. Looking back, it was the beginning of something much bigger. At only 18, J’mon took that creativity and began building STM from the ground up. Now 20, the past two years have been filled with trial and error, growth, and lessons that could only come through experience. With little guidance or outside help, he learned the clothing business as he went. Designing, marketing, money management, decision-making, and even failure became part of his education. There were no shortcuts. Every mistake taught him something. Every setback required him to adjust. Somewhere between building a brand and figuring out life, the process began molding the young entrepreneur just as much as he was molding STM. For J’mon, the “no handouts” mentality goes deeper than business. It comes from a childhood of learning how to make something out of whatever was available. Sometimes our purpose is closer than we realize. The same kid who once turned his brother’s old clothes into something of his own is now turning his experiences, creativity, and vision into a brand. J’mon’s environment may have shaped him, but it doesn’t have to define where he finishes. Instead, every experience, obstacle, and lesson only adds more value to the person he is becoming.
