🚨Attn!!! Baby's First Gallery incoming!!!🚨

Please come, share, and support this community art show opening at @this.and.that.2731 on Oct. 10, 6-10 pm. $10 w/mask, $20 w/o. 👹

I've been reluctant to call myself an artist for a long time, but making stuff for play to express my big feelings has been a throughline for a long time!! It is funny how once I started claiming it, I started believing it *and*, simultaneously more opportunities emerged that encouraged my creative expression. Funny how that happens.

I've been playing with different mediums for a while, and in the past few years I've been having so much fun returning to something I realized I hadn't even considered a craft as much as something we did for party accessories on occasion: papier mache. I've used it to make piñatas over the years (including a 3.5-ft tall snowman filled with small bottles of booze and scratch off tickets for an unhinged winter party for the bike shop I worked at...it was a hit!)

I've returned to papier mache for costumes for Halloween and themed parties. Over a year ago I began to look more into the craft of cartonería, and realized something I had relegated as "something my mom had me help her with sometimes" as a kid is actually tied to my family's culture and history. While it was introduced during the violence of colönizætion in México to spread Cätholicism, it's been adapted by Indigenous communities and artists beyond their original "intended" use. I remember being awestruck at the gorgeous cartonería masks at the anthropology museum in CDMX, but never connected the dots between that art form and the weird stuff I made, but they are absolutely relatives.

When I saw Nat put a call out for contributors to a community art show featuring masks, I knew I had to participate. The process was wonderful in its ability to break my brain open to the possibility of working with reclaimed paper pulp, homemade pastes, stuff generally considered "trash", and turning it into something fun/weird/expressive. AND for it to have cultural roots and be so environmentally sustainable just makes my heart sing.

Hope you can make the opening! See ya there ✌🏽
