Rijksakademie resident Olga Micińska @o_o.m__m presents ‘Routine Maintenance: A Tale’ together with Lower Levant Company (Emiddio Vasquez & Peter Eramian) at Thkio Ppalies in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The exhibition brings two existing works into conversation, tracing histories of military transmission and surveillance in Cyprus alongside the lives and movements of bats. Recordings range from frequencies captured near British RAF military antennae to bat calls recorded in Cyprus, Cuba and Texas. Through speakers, ceramics and sculptural forms inspired by artificial bat houses, the works explore how human and other-than-human life inhabits and crosses militarised landscapes.

‘Routine Maintenance: A Tale’ opens 16 October at 19:00 and runs through 6 November 2026.

Photos from Sonic Acts: Peter Eramian

Performance | Taysir Batniji

"Like Water" is a durational performance by Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji, presented as part of the 2008 exhibition "Water: Misery and Delight" at IFA Gallery in Stuttgart.

Using water and a paintbrush, Batniji inscribes onto the concrete floor an inventory of 109 Arabic terms for "water", drawn from Mahmoud Darwish's "Memory for Forgetfulness." As the artist writes, each word vanishes progressively, evaporating into air or absorbing into stone — leaving almost invisible traces on the ground.

Reflecting on this gesture, Batniji explains: "The work stems from a striking contradiction: the vast linguistic vocabulary of more than a hundred words for water in Darwish’s book is set against a region suffering from its acute scarcity. Today, amid recent political developments, addressing this crisis has become all the more urgent."

This performance is part of "Across Waters," a research project and public program curated by Reem Rizk in collaboration with the Arab Image Foundation, Haven for Artists, Thkio Ppalies, and Visual Voices, with the generous support of the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC).

“Across Waters” is an interdisciplinary public program taking place between Lebanon and Cyprus and running from September till December 2026. Comprising an exhibition, discursive and film series, and a performance, the program invites scholars, cultural practitioners, and students to examine the politics of water across the Mediterranean East.

Drawing on law and policy, political science, environmental studies, architecture, and the arts, “Across Waters” aims to challenge reductionist notions of water, reframing it instead as a site where social, political, and ecological hegemony are negotiated and contested.

Grounded in fieldwork in South Lebanon in July 2026, the program examines water weaponization and the systemic control of transboundary resources amid ongoing regional wars. It demonstrates how the deliberate targeting of hydraulic infrastructure functions as a mechanism of state violence, resulting in severe ecological and humanitarian crises — and exposes the failure of international law to confront these water-related crimes.

Israel has been responsible for the systematic destruction of critical water infrastructure across the region. In Lebanon, it has repeatedly targeted the Litani River and its irrigation systems, cutting water access to thousands of hectares of agricultural land across the South. Similarly, in Gaza, the destruction of desalination plants, water wells, pipelines and sewage systems has yielded famine, spread of waterborne disease, and has exacerbated an already severe humanitarian crisis. This context demands critical inquiry into how water has been weaponized as an instrument of occupation and territorial expansion, and as such lays the groundwork for a renewed water culture.

Further details on the program schedule will follow.

“Across Waters” is curated by Reem Rizk in collaboration with the Arab Image Foundation, Haven for Artists, Thkio Ppalies, and Visual Voices.

This program is made possible with the generous support of the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC).

When I first arrived on the island in February 2024, Thkio Ppalies welcomed me with a generosity that went far beyond opening the doors of a space. It offered a profound sense of belonging, healing, and room to imagine possible futures—a refuge I know many others have found within its walls.

Today, Thkio Ppalies is calling on friends, and friends of friends, to help hold the fort. I am happy and grateful for the opportunity to give back to a community that has shared so much with me.

Join us this Thursday at 7pm for a fundraising event to celebrate and sustain this vital space.

Come hungry, bring friends, and expect a lot of fun!

What is behind that curtain?
Unwritten scores for a party by Elena Savvidou at 11:00-14:00

Choreography emerges in parties through unwritten scores - social cues, spatial relations, and shared rhythms that guide bodies while leaving room for improvisation. Existing within a defined temporality and often unfolding in unconventional timeframes, the party can be understood as a happening: a continuous becoming in which moving, resting, and relating emerge as a forever changing compositional act.

It was a large room
Full of people, all kinds
And they had all arrived at the same building, at more or less the same time
And they were all free
And they were all asking themselves the same question
What is behind that curtain?
You were born
And so you’re free
So happy birthday
Born, Never Asked, Laurie Anderson

Elena Savvidou is a performance artist working with sound and a musician working through performance. Over the past few years, she has been improvising in diverse spaces, using a variety of materials to create feeling-specific performances that offer self-contained sonic experiences. Her work is deeply influenced by the environments in which she performs. She is particularly interested in how movement and sound act as transitions between moments, shaping new, temporary environments. An important aspect of her practice unfolds on the dancefloor, where people’s gestures and unspoken dynamics become her medium. In recent years, through organizing parties together with a collective of people, she has explored the dancefloor as a space for movement experimentation and shared listening, intentionally shaping these gatherings to feel as casual and intimate as a living room. Through this research, she coined the term vibe creator, proposing that within the structure of the dancefloor, interactions between people and the DJ give rise to shared memories, unwritten choreographies, and fluid social roles.

!!!!!!!POSTPONED!!!!!!!!

We are so excited to be hosting this as a parallel event at Rhyzome!!

Notes on Spitting - an evening on dance corroding choreography

Notes on Spitting is a performative reading by Daniel Blanga Gubbay, based on a series of texts commissioned and recently published by Mousse Magazine. Structured in four chapters unfolding over 24 hours, the script blends theory and fiction. Through dance descriptions, reflections on sexual drives (kinks and unproductive pleasures), and the recurring image of a volcano, it explores the disruptive force of dance and its ability to corrode perceptions of time and the body.

Drawing on performances and writings by Maria Hassabi, Alina Popa, Nora Chipaumire, Alex Baczyński-Jenkins, Carla Lonzi, André Lepecki, Bini Adamczak, the evening reflects on the relation between dance and choreography, and between sex and pornography, as forces not yet fully captured by form. The presentation is conceived together with and followed by a conversation with Dimitris Chimonas, his recent performance Sprt!, and a shared passion for the un-containability of dance.
