Great ride out with @2wheelspaul to @haughmondvillagestore for coffee & a sandwich today. I hadn’t seen Paul in ages. Partly cause I’ve been indoors on the sofa for months & partly because he’s just finished a mammoth ride out to Spain. Needless to say I struggled to keep up with him. Climbing the Burway at the end of the ride was definitely a stretch for me. But I did it. Onwards & upwards. #ridebikesbehappy #bikeride #rideshropshire #pitchfordhall

Im pooped after a busy first week of Movember. Its not easy growing a moustache this fine 🥸🤣 So todays words are with kind permission of Barrie Thomson, one half of the inimitable couple that make up @feastsandfables Ive long admired their various outputs, Barrie is a fine wordsmith & a thoroughly decent chap. When i saw the cycling poem in their recent newsletter i asked if i may use it here. Go give them a follow & sign up for their newsletter. You’ll be tantalised with a miscellany of goodness. The 'silence' of the lone cyclist (Barrie Thomson) ∞ It is never silent The whirr of the gearing Wind whistling Gasping for breath Thoughts Always the thoughts The curses as thighs burn Silent curses For the cast of one Not for an audience No-one is watching It's personal Each hill ... each ridiculously steep hill An individual challenge That whistling wind Always in my face Headwind In my headspace Stopping me in my tracks Legs too weak to push against it Silent curses Quiet words of determination Pushing on To the next hill Taken silently ∞ #cyclepoems #bicyclepoetry #ridethenwrite #feastsandfables

Elenydd : the desert of Wales As we continued we passed a mother walking her dog and two young children. It seemed an odd place for a family stroll being in the absolute middle of nowhere. We had passed the source of the Ystwyth and it now flowed behind us back out to sea. We were currently following the river Elan which sprung from this vast open moorland around us. It flowed into the relatively modern valley reservoirs ahead, supplying water to an astonishingly large area & ultimately running into the River Wye. We marvelled at the intelligence of the Victorian engineers who had come up with such a grand scheme whilst wondering where that kind of foresight had gone in todays society. Now it seemed we wilfully ignore the potentially catastrophic consequences of our own actions rather than solve them for future generations. A good 3 miles down the road we chanced across a young man. He seemed to be looking for something. We wondered if he had misplaced a wife, two children and a dog? The sun was now warming us as we started a gentle climb under heaping cumulous. A pair of cyclists approached and hollered a cheerful greeting as our tangents collided so briefly. We pulled up next to a grit bin. It was missing its lid & sporting half a Pan Celtic Race sticker. We looked back in awe at the valley behind us. The greenish blue plastic seemed so out of place amongst a sea of golds & greens. The ferns a burnished rust, the sky a dirty white. Cotton balls sprinkled with ash & torn apart revealing pastel blue. The road we had travelled wound back to the horizon like a piece of yarn. Not quite as meandering but otherwise practically indistinguishable from the river Elan beside it. We decided to go back on ourselves. Despite the additional distance we were keen to loop around the reservoirs & soak up every ounce of this unqiue place. Our much anticipated pavement picnic at Rhayader Co-op would just have to wait a while longer. (continued in comments)

The Ystwyth Trail guided us gently away from the town along a carpet of wet leaves & fine gravel. Indentations in the surface brimming with last nights considerable rainfall. We started to question our route selection ahead. Would the less hospitable trails around Claerwen be too much? & What about the ford that we had to cross? We stopped at the suspension bridge to consider just how quickly the Ystwyth was flowing. Often times it was a mere trickle, burbling alongside this easy route into the hills. Today it was running fast & high under skies which still looked capable of delivering more precipitation. Bands of grey were being spirited through blue skies by a feisty wind. We felt ourselves warmed briefly by the sun & then immediately spritzed with fine rain out of clear skies? Our first double rainbow of the day made an appearance, which stopped us in our tracks. We could actually see the end in the field opposite, so close we could almost smell the pot of gold. We considered abandoning the ride in favour of an actual treasure hunt. Imagine the new bikes we could buy if we could find the leprechaun (& if we could find one in stock). We knew it wouldn’t be the last rainbow but today was about soaking up autumns best not racing home at full tilt. We decided on the road to Pontryhdygroes, past the wood yard. It would mean sacrificing the Claerwen for Cymstwyth but no hardship there. We picked up some company, possibly the cheeriest cyclist in Wales who delighted us with his lyrical valleys accent & turn of phrase. The variety of incredible individuals whose lives tangents bisect your own on a bike ride, never fails to amaze me. The landscape unfolded in front of us, treating us to slanting light through the forest & a full spectrum of greens, golds, umber & ocher. “There we are” Three simple words, which echoed throughout our day in that sing song Welsh timbre. #ridethenwrite #ridebikesbehappy #roadslikethese

The plan was simple. Leave in the dark, catch the train from Newtown to Aberystwyth, breakfast in Spoons, leave by 10 & ride across Wales back to home. It would mean arriving in the dark but we had lights. Most of the route was off road. We’d take the Ystwyth trail, then hack out around the Claerwen reservoir, quick lunch at Rhayder Coop then up & over the hills & back along the Kerry Ridgeway to Bishops Castle & home. We’d make the most of the final day of British Summer Time & that extra hour of daylight & hopefully witness autumn in full flourish across the spectacular backdrop of Mid-Wales. And there was a hefty tail wind predicted for the day. That was the plan. Like all good plans there was latitude to change it if needed. But it started well. #walesneverfails #autumn #ridethenwrite #ridebikesbehappy
