My deepest condolences to Professor Jason Arday’s family, loved ones, and all who are part of his world. Grief, the hardest journey. Community- people coming together through shared experience, connection, and belonging. Yesterday, I felt the meaning of community in a way that is difficult to put into words. Tens of thousands gathered in collective grief to remember Professor Jason Arday. Many of us have spoken about the racist rhetoric and campaign surrounding Professor Jason Ardays, and the wider reality of rising anti-Black racism. But yesterday wasn’t about answers. It was about standing together. I arrived to pay my respects and left having connected with strangers who collectively feel the same. What stayed with me most was that understanding. The constant feeling of being gaslit of questioning your own experiences and whether you are overreacting is exhausting. Yesterday, for a moment, I didn’t have to question myself. I was surrounded by people who understood. It made me ask: what do we do with that feeling of community? How do we build on it? How we listen, challenge racism, protect our spaces, and support one another? Most importantly, how do we stop waiting for change and start creating it in how we show up for each other every day? I cried for a man I didn’t know. Professor Jason Ardey. For a man that continues to inspire. Quite literally standing shoulder to shoulder with so many who didn’t need explanation reminded me that community is needed now more than ever. Yesterday we came together. Now we have to continue to carry that understanding forward.
