The Real Story Behind the Song, "Now I Am Forty"

By Noble MECA – Mbah Ekene Collins Arum (as narrated by him):

I was born 1983 (15th April to be precise), and have been writing songs, poems, and short stories, as a hobby since my teens. But in 2005, at 22, I stepped into studio for the first time and recorded my first demo - which made me regard the year 2005 as the year I officially identified myself as a musician/songwriter.

Fast forward to 2023. I’m about to turn 40, and had wanted to write a song that captured what “forty” feels like, and suddenly, an idea hits me - taking me down the memory lane: it's been 18 years since you made your first demo, and you are still unknown, I thought to myself.

That’s the song!

The “girl that I have loved since I was eighteen (as I painted a picture of in the song)” is actually music. I kept quiet for 22 years… no — 18 years in real life. I only applied artistic license in twisting the numbers in the lyric for rhythmic flow:

“Loving you since I was eighteen” and “in years, it's been twenty two, I have failed to speak” The math is reversed, but the weight is the same. “No more dulling. I'm gonna tell you the truth. Now I am forty, I can’t afford to be a fool...” This is me finally speaking!

NOW I AM FORTY (LYRIC)

No more dulling
I'm gonna tell you the truth
Now I am forty
I can't afford to be a fool

Do you know I’ve been loving you
Since I was eighteen
In years it's been twenty two
I had failed to speak

There’s no name my
Friends hadn’t called me
All because I
Kept mute when'ver we met

Do you know I’ve been loving you
Since I was eighteen
In years it's been twenty two
I had failed to speak...

I will be shocked
If you ain't taken
Bu' if you are yet not
It means we are destined

Cause yes I have been loving you
Since I was eighteen
In years it's been twenty two
I had failed to speak

Girl it’s true I’ve been loving you
Since I was eighteen
In years it's been twenty two
I had failed to speak...
