Matt Ahn opened @goldenstartattoo at 850 Clay St in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 2018. His wife’s family owns the building. In 1939, her grandparents, Tommy and May Chin Tong, launched North America’s first Chinese-language radio show from San Francisco, broadcasting for 40 years under the Golden Star Radio Company. The tattoo shop’s name honors this legacy. This month, the original radio sign on the building, still displayed and often photographed, will be restored.

Tattooers featured in the photos and on duty that day include @jehoo1, @415tea, and @matt__ahn.
