In 1980 F-Beat’s first big release was ready to go, Get Happy!!, the new album from Costello And The Attractions, it was primed by the singer’s involvement in the burgeoning 2 Tone scene. Costello produced The Specials’ debut (1979) and released the Sam & Dave cover I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down as a single in January (1980) on 2 Tone in the interregnum between Radar and F-Beat.

This first version was withdrawn from the market due to legal action from WEA. Reportedly most copies were given away at London and NYC gigs. This one was never in a picture sleeve …. but who needs that with this label and matching company sleeve.
Swipe for second version on F-Beat with art by Barney Bubbles released just weeks later on February 8 1980.

A concept 45 par excellence.

Years ago composer/arranger Van Dyke Parks began releasing a series of 7” vinyl records on his own label Bananastan which were never intended to be released or later compiled together in any way. Each comes with an artist-designed cover, first out was this Ed Ruscha single.

Parks know that he and Ruscha was running in a parallel universe and he wanted to somehow show that.

He asked Ruscha to allude visually to the lyrical work within, by letting him use a previously done piece, or devise something new. Ruscha offered the use of “PARIS” from 1963 (1). But the next day, I got an additional ”PARIS” sketch proposal for further elaboration, with thoughts and the question “Van Dyke—what think ??” (2). The annotated sketch Ruscha had made, addressed to Parks, to modify the original image for the cover was used on the record sleeve exactly as it was with Ed’s notes for the back jacket of “Dreaming of Paris.”

And there is no coincidence that the Bananastan record label is “Warner Records Green” a label Parks was closely connected with for most of his career.

Ruscha rarely do record sleeves but swipe for versions of McCartney III and the recent Beatles single.

7inch picture sleeve poster by Apple

Pictured here are some of the original singles (2-5) as released by EMI throughout the world at the time, assambled by Joachim Noske and Bruce Spizer. Swipe for a few close ups.

This poster was one of 7 different and a part of the campaign for 1, a Beatles greatest hits album (6), released in November 2000. The album features virtually every number-one single the band achieved in the United Kingdom or United States from 1962 to 1970. The single CD and double vinyl did quite well and sold over 31 million copies.

1 went on to inspire the release of a wave of compilation albums, in particular three other «number ones» albums: Elvis Presley’s ELV1S (2002), Michael Jackson’s Number Ones (2003 and the Bee Gees’ Number Ones (2004).

The Who • Polydor France 7”, released June 30 1967. One major British band showed solidarity to another, in dramatic circumstances. Swipe left for full 7” sleeve 1-5.

An infamous News of the World story prompted a police raid on Richards’ Redlands home in February 1967. Mick’s trial on drugs charges began on June 27 in Chichester, and Keith’s the next day. Two days later came the sensational verdict that both had been found guilty.

Spontaneous demonstrations broke out all over London. The Who’s Keith Moon, his girlfriend Kim and the band’s road manager John Wolfe drove in Keith’s Bentley to the West End and join the protesters. Moon and his girlfriend were pictured (outside a Wimpy Bar), Kim holding a “Free Keith” banner, and The Who drummer one saying “Stop Pop Persecution!” (6).

On June 30, the two Stones were freed on bail pending an appeal which would, a few weeks later, see the sentences quashed. But on the 28th, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and Keith Moon had hurriedly convened a studio session at De Lane Lea in London.

To express solidarity with their fellow stars, the trio recorded covers of “(This Could Be) The Last Time” and “Under My Thumb.” John Entwistle, still away on his honeymoon, gave his blessing for Townshend to play bass and overdub the parts. With “The Last Time” on the A-side (and the label copy stating “in support of Mick Jagger and Keith Richard,” as he spelt his name then), the single was in shops just two days after recording. By then, Jagger and Richards were out on bail. The Who intended to continue recording Stones songs for as long as Mick and Keith were in jail 👌.

It was late December 1977 when Talking Heads released this second single from the emerging debut album, Talking Heads: 77.

'When I started writing this, I imagined Alice Cooper doing a Randy Newman-type ballad," Talking Heads frontman David Byrne explained in the liner notes of Once in a Lifetime: The Best of Talking Heads. "Both the Joker and Hannibal Lecter were much more fascinating than the good guys. Everybody sort of roots for the bad guys in movies."

ROOGALATOR button Do It Records • Stiff/Beatles/Emitex

1975 and bands were bubbling up gloriously all the time, and some of them were terrific – Ian Dury’s Kilburn & The High Roads, Nick Lowe’s Brinsley Schwarz, Sean Tyla’s Ducks Deluxe and so forth. But there was also something about Danny Adler’s Roogalator.

Within months, the press was beating a path to the band’s door. Drawing deep from Adler’s own experience on the Cincinnati club circuit of the late ’60s, where he gigged alongside Dyke & The Blazers and Bootsy Collins. Roogalator offered a minimalist funk sound which was utterly at odds with the country, blues, and early rock sounds normally heard on the pub rock scene.

’All Aboard With The Roogalator’ Stiff Records (BUY 3 1976), was the inevitable choice for the band’s vinyl debut, and it remains a great 45er in Stiff’s early canon. The sleeve (2-5) designed around the appearance of an old Beatles album was so close that EMI waded in to demand Stiff remove a advertisement for the old Emitex record cleaner from the artwork at which point Stiff, in a somewhat-defeating (but certainly characteristic) move, withdrew the record altogether.

Roogalators debut album, ’Play It By Ear’, (7) on Do It Records arrived in 1977. But with further member changes Adler soon realised the band had reached the end of the line.
