Oh my! 🥺 Today, I received such a lovely critique for an animated music video I directed for the Finnish band @pihkaismyname in 2020.

➕Side note for the new folks here: Firstly—warmly welcome! Secondly—my journey to becoming a visual artist and painter has been anything but straightforward. I’ve always painted (and I have an MA in visual culture and contemporary art), but I’ve also done a bunch of other things. One of them is earning a degree in 2D animation.

➖This music video was the first (and only) one I’ve directed. I had already started designing the character with the band two years prior, and I absolutely adore Pihka Is My Name’s music. It was an honour to illustrate this cinematic +- song through hand-drawn animation.

➕I took the liberty of translating the @5festofficial critique. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, appreciate and post about this art form!

➕PIHKA IS MY NAME +-
➖Animated Music Video

”Released in 2020, this music video is a beautiful animation about Pihka the robot, who chases the northern lights through a snowy forest, longing for others like itself. The instrumental track has an epic sound, and Pihka steals hearts along the way.

The animation by Elli Maanpää is a psychedelic trip into an imaginary world where Pihka the robot lives and searches for new friends. The color palette is rich and vibrant, perfectly emphasizing the grand soundscape and atmosphere of the music.

A lyric-free track leaves room for interpreting the surreal visual storytelling. To me, the robot is searching for its kind. In the end, both the protagonist and the scenery seem to break apart, but I want to believe that Pihka survived and continues its adventures.

Major props for such an ambitious project! Animation in music videos is a tricky art form, and this video gets everything right. Even the winter landscapes give me chills.”

❤️Wow. What a compliment. Thank you!

🎥Psst. I’ll add the link to the film to my stories, or you can simply Google it!
