RDD#029: HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN – THE ANIMALS (1964)

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

A CHEAP SONG: This emotional, somewhat melancholic rock classic is actually a traditional folk song that British miners were already singing back in the early 1900s, with roots tracing back to the 16th or 17th century. The Animals didn't have to pay a dime in royalties to record it since it was already in the public domain.

THE ARPEGGO TRICK: The Animals' rendition is famous for its iconic arpeggiated intro. Guitarist Hilton Valentine admitted he simply took the chords Bob Dylan had recorded in 1961 and played them as arpeggios. Basically, an arpeggio is an "unpacked" version of a chord: while a chord plays its notes simultaneously, an arpeggio plucks them one by one, sequentially.

A DOUBLE PEAK: Serving as the ultimate bridge between traditional folk and the raw electricity of the British Invasion, this track took The Animals straight to the top of the charts in both the UK and the US—and even today, it remains one of their most-streamed songs on Spotify.

GPO 1960s 706L in my collection of original colours of the Diakon moulds, GPO factory, and then refurbished in GPO wales factory marked FWR. The telephone was rented by subscribers from the GPO in a choice of 7 original colours as seen for the home (the two tone grey is on my telephone table). A monthly payment to the post master general would be needed for the line connection and hand microphone. The GPO engineers were responsible for installing the telephone to the the street boundary and subscribers were forbidden to tamper with the property of the GPO. Glad to have these in my collection and themed with their contents of the telephone era 🇬🇧#60s #1960 #1960fashion #1960style #years #yearsandyears #yearsold #60svintage #colours #coloursoflife #colours_of_day #homedecor #homedecoration #choose

“They sent us here to fight shadows, to kill ghosts, catch the scrum in the jungle. But the jungle, the jungle is alive, it watches, it waits, it does not forgive.”

An edit I made a few months back that I hope depicts the chaos and horror of the Vietnam war, as well as the surrounding chaos that insued because of it.
