How a projector turned my photographs into an experience @benqmiddleeast making it happen…

When I started creating The Spaces We Don’t Notice, I knew I didn’t want people to just look at photographs. I wanted them to step inside the work. To slow down. To spend time with each image. That’s why projection became such an important part of the experience…

The BenQ TK705i allowed me to transform a blank wall into a space for reflection. The 4K clarity brought my photos to life, also the auto focus feature just made it easy to reframe the projector every time it was moved accidentally and love how you can have a projection of upto 150 inches cause of which every photograph became larger than life, giving viewers the chance to notice details they might otherwise miss. Combined with the voiceover, it became more than a photo series. It became a journey through spaces we often walk past without seeing…

Sometimes all we need is a different perspective to notice what’s been there all along…

At the end of the day, I think that the Middle East could be represented by so many things in art because it is a region that is so rich in history, heritage, and culture- in other words, Sadu shouldn’t be the only defining piece of the entire region, especially when there are over 5,000 years of civilization to sift through and research.

As the original artist of @thesteerman X @68reserve ‘s Porsche Targa Sadu 911 art car from Icons of Porsche Middle East (Dubai, 2023), I wouldn’t have done the same concept again if I were asked to because I was so impacted and inspired by what other beautiful things I saw during my short trip to UAE.

I debated on how to handle this situation privately, but after learning more internally, it is my opinion that this connection should be said out loud. I absolutely do wish that I had gotten public recognition for the ideas that I came up with and executed directly in front of Porsche Middle East and its patrons 3 years ago, and knowing that it’s likely not going to happen does sting.

The lesson here though is that occurrences like this force me to think bigger and better. This is the best that I could come up with 3 years ago, but it’s not 2023 anymore… I could do so much more now and I will. I’m well beyond where my mind was at then, and I believe that my ability to render, articulate, and execute what I feel inspired by into a visual interpretative artwork has had much more time to develop and so there is no reason as to why this would be a setback for me mentally. Clearly, I was doing something right.

To cultivate an idea into reality gives a distinctive feeling that can’t be cloned.

In 2023 @68reserve x @raeroberts launched a beginning to this project with the intent to fuse culture with art, racing and heritage. That is when the #Sadu 911 targa was born, today we reap its harvest and conceptions for what’s to come.
