Not rare, not expensive but for some indispensable music and design from Charly R&B.

Art by HAMISH with exception on Otis Rush which is NOZBIG.

Charly Records sold vinyl compilations and reissues in the early '80s ('50s/'60s blues/r&b and alot of '60s soul), they were pretty much the only option and they were great. Original mono where appropriate (which had been ignored by everyone up to this date) and copious liner notes by Charles Shaar Murray, Cliff White, Joe Strummer and others.

”……R&B is an area where I like going back for several reasons. One, because particularly the recent compilation LPs which have been coming from Charly, Kent and Ace Records. They were mainly things I had never heard before, you know and I do occasionally like to put a few of my old favourites from that era in, because I know that the majority of the people that listen to the programme probably won’t have heard them before either or won’t know them terribly well. The occasional reference point from the past I think is quite useful as well, something that helps you identify with things that are going on now."
John Peel 1984

Peel played Charly releases of archive material regularly across the post-Top Gear decades, starting February 1976. He featured numerous releases on the label, particularly from its Charly R&B imprint, including blues and soul, covering old favourites John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Elmore James, O.V. Wright etc.

Charly was founded by Jean-Luc Young in France in 1974, moved to England in 1975.
Charly Records was dissolved in 2001, and under new management became part of the Snapper Music group.
