In STRAP: STRetch Assembly Performance, artists Technology Overload (M Arch ’23) and Harris Chowdhary (M Arch ’25) present new work at the Wiesner Student Art Gallery about systems of value and control.

Welcoming visitors to the exhibition is Overload’s piece Lure, which consists of a spinning LED strip displaying abstracted, data-manipulated images of flesh. The idea of abstraction is central to their work here, as both the bait and the trap—the idea that any system for understanding the world is necessarily also something of a cage.

Chowdhary’s work, meanwhile, explores the systems that manage the value of objects. In STRAP, he concerns himself with "waste" objects—decommissioned MIT fire alarm hardware and used Amazon delivery bags, for two—produced by systems like industrial capitalism. What meaning, he asks, do these objects have (themselves manifestations of the systems that made them) when strapped together as a poem?

STRAP opens with a reception on November 18 at 5pm, and will be on view until December 23.

TOMORROW 🔊 ✨

This graduate level studio explores the design of an audio-focused building, situated on a site near or around the traditional territory of the Wampanoag Nation. We will consider site and landscape as narrative mediums. In the same way that we think of museums, galleries, monuments and archives as vessels of knowledge, we will equally acknowledge the stories that exist outside of them. We will inquire into the existence of counter-narratives in the land around us that require new forms of interpretation, display, and communication. This studio will emphasize site analysis, the development of building drawings, and the expression of an architectural character that intervenes in the physical environment, while incorporating an education in the fundamentals of electronics and acoustics. Students will learn how sound reproduction works, how to build circuits, and design and build loud-speaking architectural models.

THE SOUND STUDIO presents
|| 36 Chambers: Methods, Models, Mediums || A Listening Party for a studio that has dedicated a semester to exploring the architectural model as a loudspeaking storyteller. By integrating sound technologies into physical model-making each project will present an immersive 5-channel soundscape. There will be thumping nightclubs and rhythmic factories! Singing volcanoes, leaking funeral homes, and more!

The studio will culminate next week on May 10th with a live listening party from 9AM-12PM.

Project by Latifa Alkhayat @line.tifa and Arthur Boscolo @tuca_bosc from the recent Spring semester's option studio Hessen Institute: Towards A Carbon Ontology, taught by Mark Goulthorpe and TA'd by Dimitrios Chatzinikolis.

The project's premise is based on the research of an MIT transdisciplinary initiative that looks at the possibility of deploying Carbon at scale as a building material, sourcing it from a clean process of natural gas pyrolysis yielding hydrogen and solid Carbon.

Project as described by Arthur and Latifa:

“Carbon Form denotes a set of abstracted systems of production and maintenance embodied in a spatial configuration; it describes much of the built environment as it currently exists. A close anatomical analysis of Carbon Form reveals an appendage of enlightenment thinking, a will-fully overlooked assumption that "environment" exists as a non-exhaustible background condition that can abstract any collateral of productive activity into itself. The Root Institute folds into a Carbon Imaginary, a model of settlement that is geographically tied to its material source.“
