❤️‍🔥 I believe that the future of neon can stretch beyond its commercial value and embrace many other functions and purposes. ⚡️To ensure that this enigmatic medium lives on we must push beyond conventional boundaries and embrace the risks involved in exploration and experimentation.

💙In “The Neon Girl” exhibition at @welcome.to.chinatown Hub in New York is thoughtfully curated by @ceekayello (CKL), I am, for the first time, revealing my 3-years journey and the experimental works that I have created under the mentorship of 9 different neon masters/benders/artists. 🤓🧑‍🔬These valuable experiences have significantly expanded my understanding on neon-making, design and its underlying science, helping to shape and grow my collections.

🤓As viewers explore the different pieces and stories behind them, I hope they can glimpse the untapped potential and evolving future of neon.

🌎The exhibition is categorised by “bents” because through the study of a bent, one can explore the different glass and techniques each country or region uses, and thus affect the tools and equipements, techniques and designs eventually.

Below are the 4 viewing tips from me 🤍
1/ The total weight of the neon tubes is equivalent to the total air density at Montreux, where La Prairie originated from 🏔

2/ Light movement (breathing effect) is reacting to the daily air quality index of Montreux. The slower it gets, the better the air quality 🌬

3/ ♻️ Upcycled neon with a poetic lighting effect is made with broken glass from the neon-making process and production waste from La Prairie’s White Caviar collection

4/ Hold hands with 1 or more of your viewing partners to light up the installation brighter! 💡

#震驚十三億人的霓虹燈設計和製作過程 🤣
😱 What makes neon glass 10x more complicated than LED neon light.

I’m gonna take my work “Hang In There” for @voguesingapore ’s #ArtistInResidence project as an example – let’s gooo! 😉💨

1/ Concept and design – apart from interpreting and developing my neon art artistically, I often take in the technical aspects from the start.  One of the technical reasons I used hangers is the similarity in the production of a metal wire hanger and glass neon. The metal wire bends its shape into the hanger in one piece, whereas glass neon needs to be bent with gas to run as one piece to lit up as well. 
2/ Technical drawing – based on the diameter and colour of the tube I’m gonna use. 
3/ Mark the rise + drop within the design.

4/ Mark the bending sequence.  ➿Take the double swirl hanger as an example, if I were to bend it “chronologically” as I was drawing it freehand, I won’t be able to complete the hanger as one piece as the double swirl will be stuck during the process.

I split the hanger into 2 parts, and weld them at the end to complete it. 
5/ Neon bending - each work uses at least 2 to 3 burners and torches.  6/ Splicing - different tubes will be welded and connected as one piece.

7/ Welding electrodes - they are attached to both ends of the tube and act as positive and negative poles for the electric current.

8/ Bombarding - vacuuming the neon tube at high temperature and killing all the impurities.

9/ Mercury + gas injection - depends on the colour, it defines which gas I will use. In this case, argon with Mercury for the blue colour!

10/ Blockage paint - to hide the glow of the neon in parts that shouldn’t be seen.

11/ Installation - this is the part where some people might have factor out.

A neon tube cannot stand alone itself! It needs a supportive wall or system for display!

💪 For this piece, I was setting it up in 2 temporary locations with the neon hanging in the air - so I have to secure them with fishing wire, unlike the neon supports that are commonly use.
