📅 Durban’s bad-light delays have exposed the limits of the ICC’s new pink-ball provision.

Former South Africa fast bowler Shaun Pollock has urged cricket to embrace pink balls in conventional daytime Tests after approximately 49 overs were lost across the first three days of the Australia–South Africa Test at Kingsmead. 🏏

The ICC now permits a pink ball throughout a daytime Test when poor light is anticipated—but only if both teams agree before the match. Australia and South Africa did not reach that agreement, while officials cannot replace the red ball once play has begun.

Pollock believes using the pink ball could have preserved around 45 overs. However, Ashwell Prince highlighted the competitive challenge: Australia have played 15 day-night Tests, while Mitchell Starc has taken 89 wickets in those matches, creating unequal levels of pink-ball experience.

The debate presents a wider governance question for Test cricket: how can the game maximise playing time while protecting competitive fairness, consistent ball behaviour and broadcast visibility? 📺

Vernon Philander has proposed giving umpires authority to introduce the pink ball when necessary, while Phil Jaques has called for daytime trials to establish how it performs from a morning start.
