We met Joe Simmons, a US veteran, who is experiencing homelessness and PTSD on the streets of Miami. We invited him to spend a day with us on @gratitudebus. We laughed, we cried, we danced, we went to the farmers market, shared beautiful meals, met so many wonderful people and shared stories of our past. We found that Joe is so full of love, an incredible poet and has tremendous elder wisdom. He was truly grateful for being seen.

One of his dreams was to have a tent and mat, so he could be more secure and comfortable on the street. At the end of the day we surprised Joe with a new tent and yoga mat.

It amazes us everyday how small acts of kindness can have such a positive impact on people lives.
This is how we change the world.

This was my sixth Burn, and the most strenuous one for me by far. It was also the ten-year anniversary of my first in 2012: a life changing experience in my mid-twenties.

Yet of them all, reflecting back over a decade, this Burn was also the one where I felt most at home (h/t @pineapplemotel).

Despite the challenges I wrestled with, I am grateful — from the beautiful synchronicities that gleamed with wonder and hope, to the worthy struggles that fired my soul.

I committed to myself that this Burn, I would strive to show up as my most authentic self. It took a ton of courage, I sat with a lot of painful vulnerability, and I processed more emotionally in a matter of days than I normally would have in weeks.

I can look myself in the eye and know that every day on the playa I was living my most authentic self. I didn’t hold back or put up an easy facade. I cried. I laughed. I felt everything. I wasn’t always my best self, but I can honestly say I stayed true to my heart each and every day. And that is an achievement I am truly proud of.

What was just as amazing was how so many friends — old and new — met my heart with warmth, empathy, and compassion… no matter what I was going through or how I was feeling. I felt the vivid power of investing in my friendships for so many years, of creating and participating in community as an important part of my life’s work. I got to witness life’s unscripted karmic ripples undulate in so many directions all at once… and wow was it incredible.

Never have I had such a multitude and density of true heart-to-heart moments in a single week than this Burn. Some of those moments involved deep conversation… some involved tears… some connected all sorts of dots in my life I never knew I had influenced… and some required no words at all, just a warm embrace.

So for all the magnificent humans who shared those honest moments of love and courage with me — whether challenging & intense or subtle & poignant — I am deeply grateful. Many of you know who you are, and many of you may not even realize. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

🙏🏼♥️✨
