Some interesting facts about Panerai:
♛The concern today known as Officine Panerai was established in Florence, Italy, in 1860. It was Giovanni Panerai’s office, that combined the functions of a watchmaking school, a repair workshop, and a sales showroom.
♛Officine Panerai created Radiomir, a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices, in 1916. In 1936 Panerai created the first prototypes of the model now known as "Radiomir".
♛In 1949 Radiomir radium-based paste was replaced by Luminor, a new self-luminous substance. In 1950 Luminor case was developed, characterized by the crown-protecting bridge with reinforced wire lugs created from the same block of steel as the case, the cushion-shaped case as in the Radiomir 1940 and the flat, wider bezel. ♛Between 1938 and 1956, Panerai supplied the Italian Navy with military tool watches. All of the Panerai watches were assembled by Rolex, and Panerai’s Italian office modified them to suit military requirements.
♛The Richemont Group (then Vendôme Group) acquired Officine Panerai in 1997.
Officine Panerai launched its first in-house movement in 2005.
♛Today the company is headquartered in Florence and manufactures watches in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Officine Panerai is considered as a luxury Swiss watch manufacturer.
