One year ago today Justin came home from his month long work trip in South Korea. This was a poster I made with messages from some of his closest friends welcoming him back. I was so incredibly happy to have him home but his return started what I now call "the beginning of the end."

Justin had medication that reduced his cravings for opioids and was meant to negate their effects if he were to use. He was nervous about trying to get his medication through customs in SK (even though I tried to tell him they wouldn't confiscate it) so he ultimately didn't take it with him, a decision that would prove fatal in the end. He went an entire month without this vitally important medicine and within 36 hours of him being back stateside he relapsed and continued to use for 5 days before I finally found out what was going on.

One of the things I so respected about Justin was how open he was with his friends about his struggles. After a relapse he would call or text every single one of his friends and let them know what happened. He wanted to be transparent so that they could support him in his recovery. They wanted only the absolute best for him.

Sadly that week wasn't the only relapse we went through after his return. It's kind of crazy how a seemingly small decision to not take his medication with him could have such profound effects. Hindsight really is 20/20. What I wouldn't give to go back and change it.

I love you and miss you JTK. Always and forever.

P.S. I tried to choose a filter that would allow the lighter messages to be read but not really sure that it worked.
