The engine that won Le Mans.
Behind the rear seats of every 996 Turbo S sits a Mezger flat-six, and it shares almost nothing with the engine in a regular 996 Carrera.

Its roots run to the 911 GT1 that won Le Mans in 1998. It carries a true dry-sump oiling system with a separate tank, built to survive hours of endurance racing. And it doesn’t have the sealed intermediate-shaft bearing that gave the regular 996 engine its bad reputation.

Mezger retired in 1994. By the mid 1990s, Porsche still sold air-cooled flat-6 in the Porsche 993, but the “Mezger engine” was used to turbo-power the Porsche 911 GT1 for the 1998 24h Le Mans win, and from 1999 onwards

The Turbo S adds the X50 kit as standard: larger K24 turbos, bigger intercoolers and a revised ECU, for 444 hp and 457 lb-ft.

Of the 227 Turbo S coupes delivered to the US in 2005,
Black (54)
Arctic Silver (43)
GT Silver (26)
Seal Grey (19)
Slate Grey (16).

Only 8 were Guards Red

That’s surprising for a color Porsche has offered almost continuously since the 1970s. In Germany it’s called Indischrot, paint code 84A, and it’s the same red that defined 911s in the ‘80s. In 2005, the buyers of Porsche’s fastest 911 mostly passed on it.

Counts from a Rennlist member’s VIN-by-VIN registry of North American Turbo S coupes.

The badge says GT2. The stories say Widowmaker. ☠️

The 996 holds a special place in my heart. I grew up around these cars, so this one brings back a lot of memories 🥹
