@_.vynaaaxx wowed us all at our first show last weekend with poise, style, wordplay, and truth as bright as flame. This was a night of poetry and art as resistance - where the poets stood up proudly to lend their voices to the voiceless. In this poem, Vy tackles those who avert their gaze from the horrors in the world - summarised in lines like “They turn their ears from the hearts that beat” and “eyes sewn shut whilst the heads fly off.” Brave, unflinching, and raw. Thank you for gracing our stage. This poem reminds me of a quote from Peter Kropotkin, “If your heart really beats in unison with that of humanity, if like a true poet you have an ear for Life, then, gazing out upon this sea of sorrow whose tide sweeps up around you, face to face with these people dying of hunger, in the presence of these corpses piled up in the mines, and these mutilated bodies lying in heaps on the barricades, looking on these long lines of exiles who are going to bury themselves in the snows of Siberia and in the marshes of tropical islands; in full view of this desperate battle which is being fought, amid the cries of pain from the conquered and the orgies of the victors, of heroism in conflict with cowardice, of noble determination face to face with contemptible cunning—you cannot remain neutral; you will come and take the side of the oppressed because you know that the beautiful, the sublime, the spirit of life itself is on the side of those who fight for light, for humanity, for justice!“ Freedom for all oppressed peoples everywhere. “Nobody is free until everybody is free.” - Fannie Hamer. “It’s freedom for everybody or freedom for nobody.” - Malcolm X. #manchester #poetry #spokenword #poets #freedom

Thank you to everyone who came to our first ever “Word for Palestine” show on a very cold, wet, and windy Saturday night. All money was donated directly to the @reviving.gaza chuffed charity page and we saw a huge surge in donations through the night. We are very proud to have cultivated a space for resistance which not only raises money for those suffering in the occupied territories but which supports the right of artists both here and elsewhere in the world to call out and challenge power. We listened, we learned, and we loved. We will take a breather now, reflect on the event and be back later in 2026 with our next event. Keep your eyes peeled for information and hopefully when the weather is better we will see even more of you next time. Saoirse don Phalaistin 🇵🇸

Poet Announcement: Supporting poet for A Word For Palestine. @_.vynaaaxx is a 23-year-old Sierra Leone-born poet, raised in South-East London. Currently based in Manchester. Much of her academic life has been devoted to the study of psychology - GCSEs, A-levels, and a degree that is actively trying to kill her — and she has reluctantly committed herself to the pursuit of self-discovery and understanding the human psyche, starting with her own twisted mind. Her writing is mainly self-reflective, indecisive and contradictory. She began, like a lot of us, reading and writing stories and fanfic, but then ADHD, coupled with “oh shit,” and a hint of “what’s the point of it all,” (insert war flashbacks here) happened, and boom, poetry. For her, writing slows the world down, makes everything that bit clearer and paints her demons a colour other than black. It feels like frolicking through a field of flowers, often ablaze, but there’s a beauty to it. Warmth and comfort, too. Through art, Vyna captures her erratic, overwhelming and often overlapping emotions, rounds up her existential dread and drags all traumatic memories into a dumpster and sets them all alight. As Vyna says in her own words “I like burning pages. It’s therapeutic.” We are thrilled to have Vyna joining us and can’t wait to welcome her to the stage! If you want to join us it’s the 7th Feb @ 7pm down at @withypublichall There will be poetry, art, crafts, cakes, a raffle, and general community loveliness. Tickets are available on the door on the night and every penny we raise will go towards supporting a mutual aid fund set up to get vital supplies into Gaza - where despite a “ceasefire” the people are still suffering horrifically under the boot of the occupiers. Free Palestine.
