Kidd Silver and 94 West are both new to me and Second Before Sunset was a interesting and versatile introduction to the duo. Kidd Silver comes out of St. Louis but headed west where he connected with the San Diego producer 94 West. Both bring a style that pushes some of the boundaries of Hip-Hop while keeping the core strong.
.
First I’ll say there’s undeniable skill with both Kidd Silver and 94 West respectively. It’s clear Kidd Silver isn’t a shallow artist and his lyrics, melodies and passion all show that. He brings great vocals and raps across the board. Meanwhile 94 West has a great production range here that helps push Kidd Silvers artistry and push what Hip-Hop can be. Their synergy is really impressive and the pairing just works. The reason I’m somewhat mixed on this project isn’t a skill thing, it’s all style.
.
With only 5 songs across 13 minutes there’s little wiggle room. Sunset Dreams starts the album on a calm and melodic note, and it’s good, I’m just not super into the hyper gentle, acoustic sound here. If it was just this song that would be cool, but this mood continued through Nimbus & High Beams and at that point is more than half the project. It’s just not a style I get into even though it’s not bad. Now the album finishes with Get Lost and We Can Go, two songs I like much more. They both bring more aggression and bring a passion in a different way than the rest of the album that just hits me stronger. They lean just a bit more into the Hip-Hop elements on those songs and absolutely made me want to hear more from Kidd Silver and 94 West.
.
These guys make dope music, it’s just not 100% for me. Or at least this project Seconds Before Sunset is. Regardless the talent shines through and can’t be denied. I for sure want to hear more from them and even if I only keep a few songs per project, I’m confident those will be amazing songs.
