POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Numerous times during the development and pre-production of the film we had to answer the question “Who is this film’s audience?”. Each time we found ourselves thinking of young Kenyans who led the protests in 2024 and 2025 across Kenya. With this in mind and with an eye on the upcoming national elections it is an absolute honour to have our world premiere at the 2026 NBO Film Festival. Thank you to @mbithi @missnyashak and the. @nbofilmfest team for the selection.

Though I won’t be in attendance playing at theatres that I grew up going to is a dream come true. All credit and thanks to this incredible cast and crew:

Meet PRINCE, Gathoni’s husband and Father to her Daughter. He is portrayed as Ignorant, Aggressive, jealous and Violent. The role was Perfectly executed by one of Kenya’s Best Performing Artists, @tobit_tom. He depicts all the Men involved in Violent Relationships. All those who add to the Increasing numbers of Femicide Victims.

It all starts with that one slap. When it Happens, please Walk Away.

It almost always begins the same way.
A woman meets a man who is charming, attentive, and impossibly kind. He says all the right things, makes her feel seen, protected, and loved. For someone carrying pain, loneliness, or uncertainty, he becomes what feels like a safe place.
The relationship grows. Promises are made. Sometimes vows are exchanged. Then, almost unnoticed, the rules begin.

"Don't go there."
"You don't need those friends."
"Stay home."
"Wear this."
"Call me before you leave."

Control disguises itself as care. Possession masquerades as love. When she questions it, she is told she is disrespectful. When she speaks up, she is asked to leave. When she considers leaving, she is warned never to return. Slowly, every choice becomes a trap where every exit comes with a cost.
What started as affection becomes isolation. Isolation becomes fear. Fear becomes silence. And silence often becomes violence.
By then, many ask why she stayed, forgetting that the prison was not built in a day. It was constructed one demand, one apology, one promise, one threat at a time until she could no longer remember where the door was.
Gender-based violence rarely begins with a fist. It begins with control, manipulation, and the slow erosion of a person's freedom and identity.
The bruises may be visible in the end, but the damage started long before the first blow.
The play reminded me that awareness is not enough. We must learn to recognize the early signs, create spaces where survivors are believed, and build a society where leaving is safer than staying.
Because love should never require fear to survive. Hope as men we can make the world a safe place for women and vice versa in as much violence is in question.

Finally got to watch Free Me by @queengathoni and I am in awe of the vulnerability and courage with which she shared this story with us!
The cast was absolutely sensational as well!

At a time when women in Kenya continue to lose their lives to gender-based violence, often at the hands of intimate partners, we cannot keep treating these deaths as statistics. Women deserve protection, accountability, and justice!!!
Femicide is a crisis. Naming it, addressing it, and acting against it cannot wait!!!
