Sùkú (also rendered Shuku) derives from the Yoruba word meaning "basket," describing the style's singular form.
Originally reserved for wives of royalty, but now commonly worn by women of all ages and status, Shuku originated from the Yoruba ethnic group of West Africa.

It is a sophisticated form of hair art that goes beyond mere aesthetic decoration, and involves braiding a hump on top of the head to look like an inverted basket and or a braided high ponytail.
It also usually features weaving or plaits that are often done along the sides of the head or as a crown.

Known for its elegance and beauty, the Shuku is a popular hair style that holds cultural significance and is often worn on special occasions or as a symbol of identity; often adorned with decorative items like cowries.

To create the Shuku traditional hairstyle, there are a variety of techniques used among the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria.
One technique, called "Irun Kiko", involves knotting the hair with thread or rubber usually black in colour.
Another technique is "Irun Didi" also known as inverse braiding.
The Irun Biba technique on the other hand, is the normal cornrow/loose braid and it is not as complex.

Swipe to see 10 different braiding patterns of the Shuku hairstyle you are likely about to see everywhere in 2026.
