Prominence of the Shrine

It is believed that Samayapuram Mariamman appears here for 10 days from the Wednesday after the new moon in the Tamil month of Vaikasi. The other days Ambal here is worshipped as Jyothi (Form of light). In this temple there are no specific idols or statues of Goddess Amman.

Temple History

600 years ago, lived a traditional bangle trader from bangleselling community named kavarai chettiyars, who was a Amman devotee .He used to visit Samayapuram Mariamman temple every year ritually. On one of his visit, he was not able to reach the Samayapuram temple and he was worried that he might not be able to see the goddess. For him, the Goddess Mariamman flew over the sky (In Tamil Aagasam means sky) and appeared in front of him at this place. Hence this place is called Aagasa Mariamman. It is believed that, this incident happened on Friday after the new moon day of Tamil month Vaigasi. So every year during this time, 10 days of festival is conducted in this temple. During the festival a shape of Amman is created using ‘tharpai’ (halfa grass) (a type of grass) and different decorations are made for the goddess every day. Holy water and the garland made up of lemon(offered to God) will be given as ‘Prasad ‘ to the devotees during the festival. Every year Amman starts with a small shape made up of grass and grows as “Raja Rajeswari” in 10 days. At the end of 10 days of festival, the goddess is moved to Samayapuram Temple and until next year Mariamman is only in the form of light here.

The date was 4th May, I never knew what all
the things the day gonna give me. For some days the air around me was black and my life was a dark phase. As all of you know everyone in the world will undergo depression and grief for a certain time and I too. Yeah but all of these influencing things will give up when I pick up my paintbrush. To be clear "my art pieces put peace in my heart" literally like a silent calm night after a squall.
And on this day I was intended to start an art. Before that day I had no idea what my art is going to be, no plan just I was meant to do the commitment. As artists, we are often told to take every *opportunity* that comes on our way to my surprise, it was not the same. As a craftsman, I know once I start my work I go into an alternate world however this time it was more divine. *"I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed:she shall crush thy head and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. (Genesis 3:15)"* I started to draw my art considering this as my subject matter.
What's more, this entire entry is to express out loud whatever sway I got from the image I was doing. Mhmm yeah, I...It made me out it moved me into it. "To be an artist is to believe in life”. This art... This particular one gave aliveness to my life.
Summing up now guys, "Workmanship gives us significance and assists us with figuring out our reality". Once in a lifetime, you get an *opportunity* that tilts in another direction ....change...make it...have fun..

The temples idols are installed opposite to each other - Such temples are known as Upadesa Sthalams. As the Devi was like a student and Jambukeswara like a Guru (teacher) in this temple, there is no Thiru Kalyanam (marriage) conducted in this temple for Shiva and Parvathi, unlike the other Shiva temples. The sannathy of the goddess Akilandeshwari and the sannathy of Prasanna Vinayaka are in the shape of the pranava manthra called "Aum". It is believed that the Amman in the temple was in deep anger hence during one of Adi Sankara's visit he installed the Prasanna Ganapathy idol right opposite to her Sannathy and installed a pair of Sri Chakra thaatankas (ear-rings) to reduce her anger.

The sculpture of Ekapada Trimurti, an aspect of Shiva with the deities Vishnu and Brahma emerging from it, is present in the temple, which can be seen only in Thyagaraja Temple, Tiruvottiyur.

There are lot of inscriptions from various Chola kings from 11th - 12th century indicating grants to the temple.The temple was widely expanded by Hoysala king, Someswara, the son of Vira Narasimha.During 1236-37 CE, he built a lot of shrines namely Vallaliswara, Padumalisvara, Vira Narasingeswara and Somleswara evidently named after his grandfather Ballalla II, grandmother Padmaladevei, father Vira Narasimha and aunt Somala Devi. The 7-tiered rajagopuram is also believed to have constructed by the Hoysala king.There are separate shrines beyond the temple compound namely Aadhi having a typical structure as the main shrines. The temple and its pagodas were subject to frequent conquest between French and English forces between 1751 and 1755 CE. The temple is being widely maintained by Vellalars and the Nattukottai Chettiars during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
