come build with us ✨

ABOUT: D23 Gallery is a provisional gallery space that brings together students, faculty, and community members to explore how artistic forms of presentation may give rise to new modalities, contexts, and socialities for their work. Mainly focusing on pushing ongoing work, this group draws from the practical methodologies of artists to imagine alternate forms for ideas to surface, providing new outlooks on what research, practice, and collaboration can look like when they leave the page and enter a room.

The forms we build toward will become exhibitions that transform the Arts Research Center (HFA D23) into a gallery for their full run, with related programming for ideas that take shape in live and time-based forms. Working in seasonal cycles, each one is anchored by a curatorial fellow and a lead artist, with a cohort gathering weekly as the exhibition takes shape. Meetings are always optional, but the constellatory practice that grows out of sustained encounters is our method.

This working group is a satellite initiative of APARTMENT 19 (@______apartment19) an independent, artist-run project space that grows from the impulse to create new encounters through the context of art.

I’m very excited to invite you to the third edition of 202019: Occasions, “Realty Principle”, a solo exhibition by Eliot D’Silva.

Eliot D’Silva’s “Realty Principle” (not Reality Principle) transforms the apartment gallery into a staged, open house. Visitors pass through domestic scenes: a cologne-scented living room, a bathroom with toothbrushes and a dripping sink, a strobing bedroom with a charger but no phone, and a kitchen of unused, plastic-wrapped utensils. A 4-channel sound work inhabits each space with acousmatic voices (Mother, Father, Daughter, Son). If “Sight Unseen” has come to refer to the execution of a real estate transaction in which property exchanges title prior to physical inspection, here, physical inspection itself becomes the unseen site: each member of the family strains toward an exterior beyond the apartment, staged as a 6’ x 1’ strip of astroturf on a balcony. Run time: 2 hours.

Eliot D’Silva is a writer, researcher and teacher living in Berkeley, CA.

#202019Occasions is an apartment exhibition series made by Yiming Clara. This show is part of Speakers Never Learn, a salon on the sonic in collaboration with Hyungtae Kim.
