As New Wave emerged from the anti-establishment energy of punk, Chinese disco in the 1980s carried the same rebellious spirit.

I wrote about this history at length in “Like Lightning, Like Fire: A Brief History of 1980s Chinese Disco,” published by Shanghai-based music zine @dailyvinyl_sh - which, ironically, you still can’t access online in China today 🤐

This Saturday, I’ll be sharing some classic Chinese disco while guesting at @mayorofsouthoakcliff and @____la.bruja____ New Wave night, @______arcadia______ Thank you for giving me a platform to share these sounds in Dallas!

P.S. The last slides are a few photos from Beijing, 2018, when we hosted a lecture + DJ party on Chinese disco 🪩

America’s 250th... This is fine... 🇺🇸🔥

Two and a half centuries later and we’re somehow still kicking. Barely. Join in the chaos this Saturday July 4th @doublewide_dallas !

@______arcadia______ resident DJs @____la.bruja____ and Gabe Mendoza (@mayorofsouthoakcliff ) welcome the amazing @samramireztx to this month’s industrial strength 80s party.

Fun to be had all night. Everything from New Wave and Goth to Industrial and Synthpop—face to face, blood to blood.

Don’t blame us.
