Crip Fieldwork Toolkit: Hacks and Methods to Make Fieldwork Work as a Disabled Researcher

Our zine is out! This toolkit offers hacks and methods for disabled researchers doing fieldwork.

It features contributions by:
@alicebieberstein @aoife_donnellan_ @code.beschler elliot.mrozinski @___erin.d @izpaehr @kimmerrlee @magdalenaewabu

It was developed during the workshop Tooling Access: Developing Methods and Hacks for Crip Fieldwork by Iz Paehr, as part of the project Cripping Ethnographic Methods. The project is organised by the working group Collective Access of the Institute for European Ethnography at Humboldt University Berlin.

Disabled researchers face significant barriers when doing fieldwork. During the workshop, we collected and invented hacks, methods, and dreams towards crip fieldwork. We are sharing them with you all in this zine.

Check it out via disabledethnographers.com/cripfieldworktoolkit (flip book, link in bio) & izpaehr.xyz/cripfieldworktoolkit.html (PDF download) Two hands of a white person, Iz, hold a booklet into the camera. On the cover, the title reads: Crip Fieldwork Toolkit. Hacks and Methods to Make Fieldwork Work as a Disabled Researcher. This text is displayed atop a curved white banner, that sits playfully stop a vivid photgraph of a pillbox. The pills form a mesmerizing pattern.

Where in the World are our Faculty Wednesday?

This week, faculty Erin L. Durban, tells us about their research online and in the University Grove neighborhood in the Twin Cities "My dissertation fieldwork took place in Haiti and its diaspora. But I have been working on two collaborative projects in the last five years: an oral history project with disabled anthropologists and another about the University of Minnesota's contribution to racial and economic inequality in housing."

A little starstruck to receive this Disabled Anthropologist t-shirt (and now stickers!) designed by @___erin.d .

A hand-drawn take on “crip life” that feels just as thoughtful as it is playful—and even better out in the world.

Newbie feeling: very honored, mildly obsessed… and yes, the stickers will be going everywhere.

We’re joining the 1 Million Reading Black Books Summer Reading Club by @melanatedreader! Add a book by a Black disabled author to your reading list, too. Beware of the problematic tropes in memoirs of “overcoming” disability that the popular publishing industry loves, and just read between the lines. What are you going to check out?!!📕🖤🤎 #1milblackbooks
