"OVERTONE", Santa Monica, CA Students: Remi Messier @___messier, Luis Brito @_lbrito_ UCLA Architecture & Urban Design @uclaaud Professor: Mohamed Sharif @shariflyncharchitecture Scale 1/8” = 1’-0” Materials: MDF, PLA, PETG, acrylic, colored bristol paper, museum board, basswood, polycarbonate Overtone argues that a building for music shouldn't just contain it. It should perform it. Designed for Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, the project organizes rehearsal, classroom, performance, and gathering into four quadrants around a shared courtyard, beneath one continuous roof. Operable facades and shaded thresholds keep the building open rather than sealed. Transparency replaces enclosure as the building's organizing logic, closing the distance between practicing musician and passing public until learning music becomes a public act. That same openness runs through the performance and rehearsal halls, which face directly onto the courtyard and can merge with it into a single larger venue. A concert spills past its own walls, turning the courtyard into a stage the city can walk into. #models_architecture #architecturemodel #modelmaking #scalemodel #sectionalmodel #facademodel #architecturemodelphotography #architecturestudent #architectureproject #overtone #ucla

cityLAB, alongside our partners in the L.A. Mayor’s office and the L.A. Housing Department, are proud to announce the results of the Small Lots, Big Impacts design competition. We received hundreds of high-quality submissions that show how we can build more infill, affordable, contextual starter homes in Los Angeles to help Angelenos put down roots and continue to call this city home. The Jury recognized 41 teams with awards. Over the next three posts we will highlight all awarded submissions. Above we highlight the professional and student teams who were labeled as winners or received citations in the Gentle Density site category. These projects demonstrate how 2-9 units can appear just like one from the street, an essential strategy for better utilizing urban infill sites in the city. We are so grateful for the thoughtful and impressive work we received from all the submitting teams. On the initiative website, https://www.smalllots.citylab.ucla.edu, we highlight all the submissions so landowners across L.A., public and private alike, can be inspired by seeing what is possible on small, leftover parts of our city. We will be releasing more information about stage two of this initiative later this summer.
