On the weekend, I dusted off my old @jetnikoff racing gear for the first time in 7 years.
I may not have been able to eat since getting my gallbladder removed 6 weeks ago, or had any suitable shoes (I had to use William's size 48 cycling shoes 🤡) or own a cyclocross bike anymore (so rode on my trusty @wondercrosscycling mtb beast).
And I ummed ahhed about giving cx another go for so long (after my friends from my old bike racing days, Paul and Seal, had encouraged me to enter with them), that I entered the race only minutes before cut off time and made it to the start line mere seconds before the start whistle blew.
But!
I was there. Seally by my side.
And it all came flooding back to me. Not my fitness, or my speed, or any of my old riding skills. But the joy of it all.
The mud. The suffering. The community.
After all the years of health struggles, I never thought I would be able to ride an unassisted bike like I used to, let alone race.
I finished covered in mud, completely wiped, and with the biggest smile glued to my face.

Anywho, it's made me want to get back into riding more regularly. So if you wanna come ride with me and drink fancy little tea and coffee drinks...

Overall it was one wild year. The highs at the start were oh so high and the middle was rocky at best, but in the end the experiences, lessons and achievements meant more than any seamless running year could have produced.

Plans have changed a lot for 2024 based on the happenings of this year, but all for the better I reckon 😎

“My beautiful husband was an intensive care paramedic for almost 20 years. He was the most caring, beautiful person in the entire world. He would give you the shirt off his back. However, about two, three years ago, he finally got hit with PTSD, which was only diagnosed seven months ago. So, yeah, our life’s been really interesting trying to navigate someone who has gone through PTSD, which is like flashbacks and triggers and yeah, just hard times.

Part of me the reason why I stayed is because I had hope that things would get better. I had hoped that I could help him, I believed I could. Even though I kind of knew I couldn’t for a few moments. So I stayed because I didn’t want to give up on someone. Training together. Neither of us feel the brightest, but we’re doing this, doing this for us, doing this for all the other carers.” — @___seal___
