Reflecting on my journey forward, my mind is flooded with thoughts of how to introduce a brand new way of living the next chapter of my life. So, I decided to take a strategic approach to identifying my needs, and holding myself accountable to stay true to all of the necessary requirements. Setting my intentions today, two words come to mind: Informed X Involved My nurse navigator and I recently had my survivorship care plan conversation, where I realized the many issues that survivors of cancer face. Suddenly, anxiety tried to sneak in and steal my optimism. JUST when I finally have the opportunity to breathe, free from what felt like never ending needle pokes, I sit with so many emotions and so many instructions all at one time…I heard someone scream “JESUS!!! Make it stop”, then I realized that someone was me… Cancer has forever changed my life as a Black woman and transformed my adulthood in ways that I never imagined. Therefore, today and everyday forward, I choose ME. I am present in all spaces of my life. I embrace my connections to every emotion that I experience. I guard my heart openly. I am unapologetic about allowing my ENERGY to take up every single molecule of space in a room. I am a good steward of my BOUNDARIES. Bone, by bone, all of these things have restored the NEW ME for the next chapter of my journey. The truth is, having cancer forces you to purposely work towards being a better version of yourself, and enjoy every moment of your life with ZERO REGRETS. I can’t guarantee you many things here, but what I can say without a doubt, is that cancer changes you forever, and that’s the positive part of this unexpected life we live.
