This achingly tender exploration of gay masculinity is set in the high seas of the 18th century. Inspired by a real queer historic document, playwright Lawrence Gullo imagines an uncanny bond between two English sailors who are ordered to translate the diary of a Dutchman marooned for the crime of love. The original cast returns under the direction of Cas Berta for this immersive weekend of performances in the gorgeous space at The Loov.

“The Dutch Castaway” is inspired by the real diary of a Dutchman marooned for the crime of love in 1725 and illuminates intergenerational bonds between gay men under the shadow of 18th century sodomy laws. Gullo’s script centers on two English sailors tasked with translating the dead man’s final, desperate account on The Island of Ascension. As they uncover his story, his spirit manifests with them upon the beach and compels them to confess the secrets of their hearts.

“The Dutch Castaway” was first performed at Boston Fringe 2026 where it swept The People’s Choice thanks to a wave of support. With just a single wooden chest and 18th century costumes, our 40 minute queer period drama transported a Somerville barbershop to a desolate Atlantic island in 1726.

We are so excited to return to this new work by Lawrence Gullo with a fully-staged production at @loov_the , which will feature the original cast under the continued direction of Cas Berta; this time with sound design and lighting design in the gorgeous and cavernous space on the stage of this beloved Somerville art studio.

🎟️See it live August 14-16 OR watch it remotely from anywhere in the world with a donation of $10. Links to both kinds of tickets are in our bio 🎟️

These photos were snapped by the talented local photographer @onesilvertongue , who we are so excited to invite to our rehearsals during this process at The Loov!

4 years in Boston!!!!

Four years ago I pulled up in my moving truck and started a new life in Boston! These past four years have been FULL of highs and lows, successes and failures, love and heartbreak, joy and sadness, work and play, and so much more. Despite every challenge that Massachusetts has thrown at me, I would never take back moving here!

Some highlights of the past four years:
- all of the amazing friends I’ve made of course!
- starting a professional tap company with @islajean
- getting adjunct teaching opportunities
- getting the opportunity to teach at the Boston Tap Party
- seeing the ocean almost every day
- getting heavy into hiking!
- climbing a mountain for the first time!
- picking up rock climbing
- going skiing for the first time
- being a part of the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party
- connecting with True Talent and starting to judge again!
- discovery myself and learning to love myself for exactly who I am

And so much more! One post just isn’t enough to highlight every person and every experience, but I am so grateful for every person and every adventure. I am so happy to live where I do! Here’s to more!

The year is 1726. Two English sailors must translate the abandoned diary of a Dutch man marooned for the crime of loving another man. As they read his words, a haunting presence manifests upon the beach with them and they find themselves compelled to confess the secrets of their hearts. Based on a real queer historical document and uncompromisingly tender, this one-act illuminates affection, sorrow, and intergenerational bonds between men who love men.
