Flying 10s are one of the best ways to measure an athlete’s true maximal sprint velocity without acceleration ability dominating the result. 🚀 WHY WE TEST FLYING 10s A flying 10 measures how fast an athlete can cover 10 yards or meters after a controlled build-up, allowing us to evaluate max-velocity sprinting rather than just acceleration. Why does that matter? ⚡ Measures true top-end speed The run-in gives the athlete time to accelerate before entering the timed zone. 📈 Tracks speed development Repeated testing tells us whether sprint training is actually improving maximal velocity—not just making athletes stronger in the weight room. 🔍 Identifies an athlete’s speed profile Some athletes accelerate well but struggle to maintain speed. Others have great top-end speed but take too long to reach it. Flying 10s help us identify which quality needs more attention. 🏃 Improves sport performance Max-velocity ability matters during breakaways, deep routes, outfield sprints, transition plays and any situation where an athlete reaches open space. 🧠 Builds sprint skill and confidence Regular exposure teaches athletes to sprint upright, stay relaxed, apply force efficiently and coordinate at high speeds. 🛡️ Develops hamstring resilience Progressive high-speed sprint exposure prepares the hamstrings for the forces and velocities they will experience during competition. We don’t test flying 10s just to see who is fastest. We test them to monitor progress, individualize training and make sure our athletes are prepared to move at the highest speeds their sport demands. Acceleration gets you into the play. Max velocity can separate you from everyone else.
