“I was classically trained in piano and cello for the majority of my childhood, so when I first heard electronic music in high school, I found myself spending hours on YouTube discovering sounds that I had never even heard before. In my first semester at Michigan, I found the Michigan Electronic Music Collective (@__memco ), which introduced me to student producers, DJs, artists, and music lovers. I learned how to DJ through MEMCO and mix a wide variety of music, ranging from acid to jazz sampled house. With DJing, I feel that I have creative freedom to set the tone of an event. It’s very interactive —I like to read the crowd and live select music to direct the mood. I am also the director of lighting and installations for MEMCO, which bridges my academic interests (architecture) with my musical pursuits. Last winter, I designed and built a portable DJ booth for MEMCO to use at events.”
