Something I first noticed a year ago has kept me digging ever since all the way to the latest SS27 collections.

What began as a fascination with what I called sacred femininity has unfolded into a broader spiritual movement, one in which female strength, faith, and resistance take centre stage.

From Joan of Arc to other spiritual female figures, designers including Colleen Allen, Mel Usine, and Rick Owens are drawing on these powerful archetypes in their collections.

Which led me to two questions: How is female empowerment being translated into fashion today? And why are we so drawn to these figures right now?

For his SS27 collection, designer Mel Usine turned to Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), a haunting portrait of feminine strength, faith, and resistance.

This reference, and many others, led us further down the rabbit hole 👀.
