You can find folklore in nearly every form of art in the Philippines today—in fashion editorials, illustrations, fine art, and even graffiti. These artists see it as a way to explore Filipino identity, to decolonize their art, or to revisit fond childhood memories. TIKBALANG: We may be familiar with the strong, mischievous, and guardian type Tikbalang presented in modern komiks and movies, but it is historically not quite so majestic. Even to this day, the Tikbalang is occasionally the excuse to explain unplanned pregnancies (as reported on GMAs KMJS).

In Plasencia’s 1589 report, Customs of the Tagalogs, he wrote:
“There were also ghosts, which they called vibit; and phantoms, which they called Tigbalaang.”

Tomas Ortiz, a seventeenth-century Augustinian priest said the Filipinos so feared the creature that "they come to make friends with him and surrender their rosaries to him and receive from him superstitious things such as hairs, stones, and other things, that they may be aided by him in certain of their affairs."

This kind of account appears A LOT in the Spanish documents. The priests were helpless in dispelling beliefs about folkloric beings. I also wonder if the locals were like, “Oh jeez, sorry Father Tomas but a mysterious demon took my rosary and gave me this anting-anting instead. What’s a person to do?” Folk beliefs have always been alive and well in the Philippines.

The one description of the Tikbalang that disturbed me the most is from Percy A. Hill’s 1934 Philippine Short Stories where a daring tikbalang kidnapped one of the belles at a grand ball in old Manila on the night of April 15, 1580. The creature was described as a "tall, hideous, in a dark tunic, its long straight hair flowing over its shoulders and with the wrinkled yellow feet of a bird. It had on a dark cloak which hung down to its knees, and its legs were those of a horse.”

In 1949 Lucetta K. Ratcliff wrote about the tikbalang: They have bodies like those of men, but their heads are similar to those of horses. Their limbs are said to be so long that when they sit their knees reach above their heads. When they laugh, all you can see is mouth."
