Wet Collodion . AHFAP . 1851

Back in June I had the pleasure at participating at the Association Of Historical Fine Art and Photography workshop with photographer Tony Richards, showcasing the ‘Wet Collodion’ photographic process.

Invented in 1851 by Fredrick Scott Archer, this process allows for a piece of glass or plate to be coated with collodion and silver nitrate to make a light sensitive surface. Before being exposed in the camera, developed, fixed, washed, dried and finally varnished.

Massive thanks to @tony.richards for such an incredible insight into this process and Isidora and Kevin from @_ahfap_ for organising this workshop.

Review: 2AND3D Photography Conference Amsterdam

In May, Robert joined colleagues at the @rijksmuseum to discuss technical and creative standards in museum photography. This knowledge, including areas such as color management and reproduction, flows directly into our work. The international conference is Europe's most important meeting on the documentation and digitisation of art and cultural heritage. The event is organised in cooperation with @_ahfap_ .

This is not a common practice in art publishing. We started Artwork Gallery during a time when the question of who gets to be seen felt urgent and personal.

Publication support has been part of how we work since the beginning. If the fee is a barrier - it doesn't have to be.

Apply free. Indicate support if you need it. We'll take it from there.

In January 2025 I was tasked with photographing / digitising 182 glass plate negatives, which depicted the very first photographs ever taken of the Bayeux Tapestry.

These were commissioned by the V&A (then the South Kensignton Museum) and were taken by photographer Edward Dossetter.

an amazing full circle moment visiting the Bayeux Tapestry museum after spending 4 months digitising 180 glass-plate negatives. These plates are the very first exposures taken of the tapestry by Edward Dossetter in 1872.

thank u to the Photography and Digitisation department at @vamuseum for letting me be a part of this journey ✨️

Reflecting on a Successful AHFAP 2024 Conference.

We recently attended the @_ahfap_ 2024 Conference, held at Merseyside Maritime Museum. It was a great opportunity to engage with leading professionals in the heritage industry and explore the future of imaging technology.

Jack Crofts from Canon EMEA presented a workshop highlighting the advantages of the Canon EOS systems, specifically the R5 Mark II and the RF Dual Fisheye lens. The workshop covered real-world applications, including working with us, which evolved from attending Canon's UK head office to being able to test the Canon R5 Mark II in studio.

We were honoured to participate in this event and are excited to see how these innovations shape the future of heritage conservation.

We were delighted to hear that Ian Lillicrap, the photographer who is working with us on our Guild Collection Digitisation Project had a selection of his photographic work from the Guild project as a showcase at the recent annual conference for the Association of Historical Fine Art Photography (AHFAP) in Liverpool at the Maritime Museum.

Ian has worked across museums, archives, libraries and galleries providing digitisation solutions for clients including the William Morris Society, the Bank of England Museum, Freud Museum, and the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Recently Ian also had a small exhibition with a poster company he also shoots for.

The Guild Collection images shown here are those that Ian showcased as part of the members exhibition at the conference. He had a hard time choosing which to show!

More details on the images will follow, once they're uploaded and available to view on ArtUK
