I’ve been in network marketing for almost 15 years—and yes, pyramid schemes exist.

But here’s where the conversation usually goes wrong:

People look at an organizational chart, see one person at the top with people underneath them, and immediately say, “See! Pyramid.”

But the shape isn’t what makes something a pyramid scheme.

The better question is:

Where does the money come from?

Is there genuine customer demand for real products or services? Are people being compensated based on legitimate sales activity? Or is the model primarily dependent on recruiting new participants and their money?

That distinction matters.

And here’s another thing many people misunderstand about network marketing:

Someone who joins years after you can potentially build a larger customer base, create a bigger organization and earn more than you.

Your position on an organizational chart doesn’t automatically determine your income.

Does that mean every network marketing company is legitimate? Absolutely not.

Does having a product automatically make an opportunity legitimate? No.

Do your homework. Understand the compensation model. Look at the products, customers, incentives and where the revenue actually comes from.

You don’t have to join network marketing.

You don’t even have to like it.

But before calling something a pyramid scheme…

know what actually makes it one.
